The women’s wheelchair basketball team showed why they are a world-renowned powerhouse in the sport as they recorded a 64-51 victory over Germany to win a bronze medal in Tokyo on Sept. 4.
Lindsey Zurbrugg paced Team USA with 22 points in the contest as all 12 athletes saw action on the floor in the medal winning match. Team USA led for 35 minutes and 47 seconds of the 40-minute match. Germany’s Mareike Miller scored 26 points while shooting 10-for-24 from the floor as their top offensive threat.
Team USA’s stout defense was led by Rose Hollermann (12) and Natalie Schneider (11) who accounted for 23 of the squad’s 38 rebounds. Courtney Ryan posted an average of eight assists per game over the entire tournament, which is the most by any women’s player at the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The women’s team last won gold at the Rio Games and their bronze medal performance in Tokyo marks the programs ninth overall Paralympic medal.
