Sixteen U.S. Athletes to Compete Abroad at Junior Grand Prix and Challenger Series Events this Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Sept. 14, 2021) - Sixteen Team USA athletes will travel to Junior Grand Prix and Challenger Series events this week. The Challenger Series continues this weekend with the 2021 Autumn Classic International in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada, while the 2021 International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP) Series continues in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Additionally, 14 U.S. athletes will compete at the 2021 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic in Norwood, Massachusetts.

In the women’s field, 2018 Olympian Karen

Chen headlines the U.S. contingent at Autumn Classic, set for Sept. 16-18. Chen is the 2021 U.S. bronze medalist and finished fourth at the 2021 World Championships. Starr Andrews will also represent the U.S. in Canada. Andrews finished 12th at the 2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships and eighth at 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America last season.

The U.S. will field two teams in the pairs competition – Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc, and Katie McBeath and Nathan Bartholomay. Cain-Gribble and LeDuc are the 2019 U.S. champions and placed ninth at the 2021 World Championships. McBeath and Bartholomay are in their second season together and finished seventh at the 2021 U.S. Championships.

Caroline Green and Michael Parsons will represent Team USA in the ice dance competition. They are the 2021 U.S. pewter medalists and won the 2021 Lake Placid Ice Dance International this summer in Norwood.

The ISU Challenger Series is a group of 10 senior-level international figure skating competitions held each year to help skaters prepare and qualify for ISU Championship events.

The United States will bring a team of eight to the Junior Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk, a city on the Yenisei River in Siberia, Russia. The event is scheduled for Sept. 15-18.

Maryn Pierce and Kate Wang will represent the U.S. in the women’s field. Pierce is making her JGP debut and earned the bronze medal at Cranberry Cup this summer. Wang is competing in her third JGP event and placed sixth in the junior competition at the 2021 U.S. Championships.

In the men’s field, Lucas Broussard returns to JGP ice after collecting the silver medal at the series opener in France. Eric Prober, the 2021 U.S. junior champion, makes his JGP debut in Russia.

Both U.S. ice dance teams will make their JGP debut in Krasnoyarsk. Angela Ling and Caleb Wein earned the silver medal in the junior competition at the Lake Placid Ice Dance International in August. Leah Neset and Artem Markelov grabbed the bronze medal at the Lake Placid event.

Entering its 24th season, the ISU Junior Grand Prix Series consists of seven international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Each athlete is eligible to score points in two of the seven scheduled events (pairs can compete in two of four designated events). Depending on the developments during the JGP Series, the ISU Council will evaluate if and how the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final 2021 (scheduled for Dec. 9-12, 2021, in Osaka, Japan) could be held by applying alternative qualification criteria. The ISU will stream all events live on its YouTube page.
