USC Shoah Foundation exhibition in Sacramento on Monday to honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day

The interactive Dimensions in Testimony revolutionizes the concept of oral history by integrating advanced filming techniques, specialized display technologies, next-generation natural language processing and artificial intelligence into one unique exhibition.
USC Shoah Foundation was established by filmmaker Steven Spielberg in 1994 to collect and preserve video testimonies of survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides.
SACRAMENTO, CA — USC Shoah Foundation will display its Dimensions in Testimonyinteractive biography exhibit as part of the Legislature’s official Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration at the California State Capitol building.
On display for the first time in Sacramento, this high-definition exhibit features two Holocaust survivors: Eva Schloss, stepsister of the diarist Anne Frank, as well as noted Holocaust educator Pinchas Gutter. Stephen Smith, the UNESCO chair on genocide education and Finci-Viterbi executive director of USC Shoah Foundation.

This one-day-only exhibit is made possible by the California Legislative Jewish Caucus.

ABOUT DIMENSIONS IN TESTIMONY:
Dimensions in Testimony is an initiative pioneered by USC Shoah Foundation to record and display testimony in a medium that highlights the significance of dialogue among Holocaust survivors and learners, and preserves the ability to do so far into the future. Dimensions in Testimony has revolutionized the concept of oral history by integrating advanced filmmaking techniques, specialized display technologies and next-generation natural language processing to provide an intimate and unique experience. Each specially recorded interview enables viewers to ask the survivor about their life experiences and hear responses in real-time, lifelike conversation. Questions are answered naturally, as if the survivor is in the room. Through artificial intelligence, the more questions asked, the better the technology becomes. Dimensions in Testimony has been profiled by the New York Times and CNN, amongst other outlets.
QUOTES:
“The ability to share Dimensions in Testimony at the State Capitol is especially moving because it shows the commitment our California legislators have to ensuring the lessons and legacy of the Holocaust are never forgotten,” Stephen D. Smith said.
“As the last generation to know survivors of the Holocaust and hear their stories directly, it is vitally important that we preserve these narratives to remember the lessons of the Holocaust. USC Shoah Foundation has been a leader in collecting survivor testimony, and they are now entering a transformative realm of story preservation. With technology like Dimensions in Testimony, future generations will be able to interact with virtual survivors and feel like the survivors are in the room sharing their stories. We are excited to exhibit this in the State Capitol during our Yom Hashoah program,” Senator Ben Allen said.
“We have a compelling obligation to educate future generations about the Holocaust, especially at a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise. Exhibits like Dimensions in Testimony and the work of important groups like USC Shoah Foundation provide innovative ways to help us remember the Holocaust and combat hate of all forms,” Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel said.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Scheduled for Arroyo Burro Open Space Restoration

Santa Barbara, California - The City of Santa Barbara Creeks Division invites community members to join Mayor Cathy Murillo and the Santa Barbara City Council for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Phase I of the Arroyo Burro Open Space Restoration Project.

The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1 at 10:00am at the Arroyo Burro Open Space, located at the end of Alan Road. As there is limited street parking available, attendees are encouraged to consider carpooling or alternative transportation.

Project Description

The City of Santa Barbara Creeks Division recently completed construction of Phase I of the Arroyo Burro Open Space Restoration Project. The project is designed to improve creek and ocean water quality and habitat conditions through the restoration of floodplain habitat, removal of non-native vegetation, and stabilization of eroding creek banks.

The project included the restoration of over four acres of creek side habitat, including the removal of existing concrete and debris in the creek, the creation of over an acre of floodplain habitat, and the installation of more than 7,500 native plants, including over 600 trees.

"This is one of the largest creek restoration projects the City has ever done," said Cameron Benson, Creeks Restoration/Clean Water Manager. "This project will provide important habitat for wildlife, a peaceful place for people to visit, and improve water quality in Arroyo Burro Creek."

The 14.7 acre parcel on Arroyo Burro Creek was purchased by the City of Santa Barbara in early 2016, when the Parks and Recreation Department and Creeks Division collaborated with the Trust for Public Land to acquire the parcel, creating a new open space park. Funding for the $4 million purchase was provided by City of Santa Barbara hotel visitors through Measure B, the California Natural Resources Agency's Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program, the State Coastal Conservancy, and Santa Barbara County's Coastal Resources Enhancement Fund.

Funding for Phase I of the Arroyo Burro Open Space Restoration Project has been provided by the Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014 (Proposition 1) through grants from the California Coastal Conservancy and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and by hotel visitors through Measure B. The total project construction cost was $1.5 million.

For more information on the project, please contact Erin Markey at (805) 560-7549 or EMarkey@SantaBarbaraCA.gov.

About Porto’s Bakery and CafĂ©
Porto’s Bakery and CafĂ© (Porto’s) is inviting the public to celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of its fifth location. The first 500 customers will be receiving a Porto’s small goody bag.

Porto’s is a family-owned Cuban bakery, famous for its Potato Balls and Cheese Rolls. They also serve a wide assortment of pastries, specialty cakes, freshly baked breads, variety of savory sandwiches, and a selection of juices, smoothies, and coffee.

Porto’s was started by Rosa and Raul Porto Sr., who emigrated from Cuba to California in the 1960’s. Rosa’s exceptional baking skills and a dream for a better life led to the creation of Porto’s. They started off with a 300 square foot bakery in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. In the 1980s, they transitioned to Glendale. Porto’s is now opening their 5th location, and the first in the San Gabriel Valley.

Each Porto’s location has a unique architecture and design and West Covina is no exception. Porto’s West Covina is a 21,943 square foot two-story building that features a 17,163 square foot bakery/cafe area, a 4,780 square foot second floor for office space, and a 2,547 square foot outdoor dining area. The massive bakery has a mid-century modern feel with a butterfly roof characterized by high ceilings and custom skylights.

Efforts to get Porto’s in West Covina started in 2010, when City staff initially reached out to Porto’s regarding development opportunities in West Covina.  While Porto’s expressed interested in the community, it took several years working with City staff to locate a site suitable for Porto’s needs. Fortunately, in 2016, Porto’s purchased the former Crazy Horse property.  In September of 2017, Porto’s obtained approval of its planning entitlements for the new building and in December of 2017 construction began.

Porto’s West Covina has transformed a challenging development site into a foodie destination for not only West Covina residents but food connoisseurs from all over the San Gabriel Valley. In addition, Porto’s has hired 300 part-time and full-time employees and is anticipated to generate $70,000 to $80,000 in annual sales tax to the City.

“It is a huge success to have Porto’s come to West Covina,” stated Mayor Lloyd Johnson. “We believe that our partnership with them is a symbol of the City’s continued commitment to attract quality businesses.  Since it was announced in 2016, we’ve been receiving an overwhelming amount of excitement. We know it’s going to be very popular with our residents and we can’t wait for Porto’s to be successful in our City!”

West Covina is thrilled to finally announce that Porto’s West Covina is opening and invites residents and Porto’s fans to check it out!

Redwood City Adopts A Social Host Ordinance to Enforce the Illegal Use of Fireworks in the Community

Redwood City is the second community in San Mateo County to adopt stronger restrictions

REDWOOD CITY, CALIF.- Yesterday (April 23rd), the City Council adopted stronger restrictions to further enforce and educate the public on the safety risks of the illegal use of fireworks by establishing a Social Host Ordinance. Redwood City is the second community in San Mateo County to enact a Social Host Ordinance, an additional tool available for the enforcement of illegal fireworks use. The City will use the adoption of the new ordinance to expand the City's community outreach efforts and further educate the community about the risks of fireworks use.

"The community has asked for the City to be tougher on the illegal use of fireworks, and I believe our efforts to date have made a difference," said Ian Bain, mayor of the City of Redwood City. "A Social Host Ordinance provides our Fire and Police Departments with additional tools to educate the public and enforce our laws. I am confident that this new ordinance will further reduce illegal use of fireworks in our community."

The City launched an aggressive community outreach campaign following the increase of administrative fines in 2018. The use of illegal fireworks could lead up to $50,000 fines and jail time. The new ordinance is an expansion of the City's efforts to continue to educate the community to the risks associated with the illegal use of fireworks and seeks to improve enforcement of the illegal use of fireworks. Currently twelve communities throughout California have adopted Social Host Ordinance for fireworks use, including the City of Pacifica and Santa Clara County.

The new ordinance and regulations applies to any person who has the right to use, possess or occupy a public or private property under a lease, permit, license, rental agreement, or contract. Additionally the ordinance applies to any person who hosts, organizes, supervises, officiates, conducts, or accepts responsibility for a gathering on public or private property. The ordinance exempts property owners who can demonstrate that at the time of the violation they had rented or leased the property to another, they were not present, and they had no prior knowledge of the violation. This new ordinance is not intended to be used to seek out violations but is crafted to hold persons in control of the property accountable for the illegal use of fireworks.

The City will use the establishment of the new ordinance to conduct additional community outreach to inform the public of its existence and potential penalties will further the goal of reducing illegal fireworks use in the community. Fireworks have been illegal since 2014 when the City Council banned "safe and sane" fireworks use in Redwood City.

The Redwood City Fire Department serves the communities of Redwood City, San Carlos, and aspects of San Mateo County. This year, the Redwood City Fire Department achieved a Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating of "Class 1". Nationwide, only 306 fire departments out of 46,000 have received a Class 1 rating - which is less than 1% of all fire departments.

Mountain View, Calif. — Starting May 1, John Marchant will step in as the interim director of the City of Mountain View’s Community Services Department. Montecito Street Bridge Ribbon-Cutting Event and Other Eastside Neighborhood Improvements

SANTA BARBARA, CA - Join the City in celebrating the completion of the Montecito Street Bridge and learn more about other neighborhood improvements in the Eastside Neighborhood at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held on the bridge on Thursday, April 25 at 10 a.m.

After 11 months of construction, the Montecito Street Bridge, located at the intersection of E. Yanonali and E. Montecito Streets, adjacent to N. Salinas Street, is now open.

The $5.7 million Montecito-Yanonali Street Bridge Replacement and Sidewalk Infill Project improves pedestrian access, traffic safety, and safety when crossing Sycamore Creek. This project includes replacement of the existing bridge, installation of new sidewalks on Montecito Street and along Salinas Street between Mason and Clifton Streets, and new lighting. The project implements elements of the City’s adopted Pedestrian Master Plan and Bicycle Master Plan, encouraging more people to walk and ride bicycles.

This project is one of several infrastructure projects in the Eastside Neighborhood made possible by Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant funds. The Safe Routes to Schools Carpinteria at Voluntario Pedestrian Improvements, also funded by an ATP grant, are scheduled for completion at the end of April and include lighting and curb work. This project will also increase safety for pedestrians, particularly students traveling to and from Franklin Elementary School.

More improvements are underway in the Eastside Neighborhood. At the ribbon-cutting, learn more about the upcoming ground-breaking of the Quinientos Street Bridge Replacement, which is scheduled to begin in late April.
