TEMECULA, Calif.- The men's soccer team dropped a tough one against Benedicitine University with a final score of 0-1.
The Firebirds dominated the offensive end in the
first half. USK was able to get nine shots off compared to the Redhawks four. The Firebirds were pushing to score but the Redhawk defense was able to keep them just clear of the net as the Redhawk goalie earned three saves in the first half. The Firebirds were able to get one through to the net but the goal was called back as there was an offside call. With a scoreless first half USK was ready to keep the offensive side going while still maintaining their strong defensive efforts.The Redhawks came out of halftime with a spark and scored a goal within the first five minutes of the second half. They were able to hold the momentum from this and continued to put pressure on the Firebirds defense. USK stayed strong and limited the Redhawks to just one goal. The Firebirds had a couple opportunities to score but the Redhawks were able to limit them to two shots in the second half.
The game was overall very even as the Firebirds had 11 shots with five on goal compared to the Rehawks 13 shots with seven on goal. Hugo Calderon led the way with four shots and three on goal. Antonio Chavez was able to get two shots off and the Firebird offense was being competitive all around as five other birds took a shot each. Ethan Ibarra was protecting the net for the entire 90 minutes and earned six saves.
