Elizabeth Marks’ phenomenal performance in the women’s 100-meter backstroke S6 broke the world record with a time of 1:19.57 to win gold at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on Sept. 3. Marks clocked in almost two full seconds ahead of the previous world record (1:21.43) from the Paralympic Games Rio 2016. China’s Yuyan Jiang finished in second (1:20.65) and Germany’s Verena Schott took home the bronze (1:21.16).
The two-time Paralympian recorded her second career gold medal including a first-place finish in the 100 breast at the Rio Games. The latest Team USA Paralympic champion collects her third overall medal at the Tokyo Games which features a pair of silver finishes in the 50 free and 50 fly.
