World Record Holder Gia Pergolini Wins Gold in 100m Back

17-year-old Gia Pergolini made a splash in her Paralympic debut, breaking the world record – twice – in the women’s 100m backstroke S13 on the second day of the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Pergolini opened the competition with a world

record in the 100m back during prelims (1:05.05) before lowering that mark in the finals as she swam 1:04.64 to claim Team USA’s second gold of the night.

Pergolini started strong off the block and posted a spit time of 33.92 when she started to pull ahead, touching the wall 1.46 seconds ahead of Italy’s Carlotta Gilli who took silver.

The Georgia native first broke the mark at the U.S. Team Trials in Minneapolis on June 17, 2021 (1:05.13) and has been competing on the international stage since 2017.
