U-22 USWNT Finish Top of JPAC Pool with High Scoring Win Over Trinidad & Tobago

SANTIAGO, Chile – In their second pool game of the 2021 Junior Pan American Championship, taking place at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile, the U.S. U-22 Women’s National Team used a strong scoring performance to beat Trinidad and Tobago. Six different athletes contributed to the 15-0 score, powered by five from Charlotte De Vries (Malvern, Pa.), to secure the top finish in Pool B.

"I am really proud of the team for achieving

our first goal of finishing at the top of our pool," said Tracey Paul, U-22 USWNT Head Coach. "Their efforts have put us in a position of being just one win away from qualifying for the Junior World Cup and the focus now turns to preparations for our semifinal matchup on Thursday."

A similar start to yesterday, USA pushed out on the front foot early, earning a penalty corner 50 seconds into the match. Unsuccessful on the chance, they kept up the pressure and an intercept by Riley Donnelly (Doylestown, Pa.) fell to Maddie Zimmer (Hershey, Pa.) who weaved into the circle and scored to put USA up 1-0. A minute and half later, Sofia Southam (Ann Arbor, Mich.) extended the lead after receiving it with space and ripping a backhand into the corner. The back half of the quarter saw four more goals through Hope Rose (Dauphin, Pa.), Charlotte De Vries (Malvern, Pa.) and two from Ashley Sessa (Schwenksville, Pa.) to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The second frame saw USA stretch the field and work different entry points while Trinidad continued to pack their circle. In the 27th minute, USA earned three penalty corners in a row and on the last attempt, Rose capitalized on a straight shot to tally her second of the game and make it 7-0 at the half.

USA added four more in the third quarter, powered by a hat trick from De Vries. The first came in the 37th minute when a left side build up got through the defense and under Trinidad and Tobago Goalkeeper Talia Seale and De Vries was there to tap it in. Two minutes later, De Vries used speed to get to the left of the circle and ripped a backhand into the far corner. With one minute until the end of the frame, Rose recorded her third of the game after collecting it off the pads of Seale and flicking it into the net. The final came on a  time expired penalty corner that De Vries converted to make it 11-0.

In the final quarter, another four goals were tallied to bring the final score to 15-0. Abigail Tamer (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) added her name in the 51st minute off a second chance on a penalty corner. A minute later Southam got her second on a great deflection off the post and two minutes following Sessa recorded her hat trick. De Vries rounded out the scoring with a hard sweep into the corner.

"I think our win today was very mature, and helped us build confidence," added De Vries. "Six players on our team were goal scorers today which was amazing. I think this game gave us an opportunity to compete and practice for the semifinals. We worked three touch throughout the field and a lot of forward movement, which is what we will need in the games to come."

Finishing at the top of Pool B, the USA women advance to the semifinal round on Thursday, August 26 and will play the second-place finisher in Pool A at 4:00 p.m. ET.
