Three-time Paralympic Medalist Marks claims silver in the pool on day one

Two-time Paralympian Elizabeth Marks took home the silver medal in the women's 50m freestyle S6 with a time of 33.15 on Wednesday evening at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.

Marks broke the Paralympic record during prelims earlier this morning (33.16), but her record was short lived as Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Mereshko won gold in the final at 33.11. Marks now owns a full medal collection after winning a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and a bronze in the 4x100m medley relay at the Paralympic Games Rio 2016.

Marks is an active military member serving as a 68w combat medic after joining the Army in 2008 and has served as a combat medic in Iraq. Marks has three more opportunities to add to her medal count and will compete in the women’s 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 200m individual-medley later this week.

Gia Pergolini and Makayla Nietzel finished fifth (1:06.46) and seventh (1:08.00), respectively in the women’s 100m butterfly S13.

Teammate Lawrence Sapp placed fifth in the men's 100m butterfly S14 in his Paralympic finals debut.
