Ian Seidenfeld ran the bracket in men’s Para table tennis singles class 6 to win Team USA’s first Paralympic gold in the sport in 25 years. Seidenfeld is following in his father Mitchell’s footsteps who secured Paralympic silver at the Paralympic Games Atlanta 1996, and is the team’s current head coach.
Seidenfeld played a perfect 3-0 sweep against Denmark’s Peter Rosenmeier in the final match at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. While making his first Paralympic Games appearance, Seidenfeld posted a 12-3 record against four opponents on his way to win Team USA another gold.
Seidenfeld defeated Great Britain’s Paul Karabardak, 3-0, in the semifinals while only giving up 14 points to his opponent (game 1: 11-6; game 2: 11-2 and game 3: 11-6). The 20-year-old also beat Chile’s Cristian Dettoni (3-2) and Germany’s Thomas Rau (3-1).
