TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior Bronte Law
had an historic trip around the ASU Karsten Golf Course on Friday,
posting an 8-under 64 to tally the lowest round in the history of UCLA
women's golf. Law also set a course record to help the Bruins to a
six-shot lead through 18 holes. UCLA shot 7-under as a team and is half a
dozen strokes up on Arizona State and UNLV.
Law was on fire from the very start, making birdies on her first two
holes, as well as #4 and #8. She started the back nine with three
straight birdies, adding another on the 14th and one on the 16th to put
her at 9-under. Law bogeyed #17, but would finish with a 64 to better
her career high by one stroke, which was also the previous single-round
best. Seven other players, including Law in 2013, had shot a 65 for the
Bruins.
Freshman Lilia Vu
is in second place, four shots back of Law, after firing a 4-under 68.
She made four birdies on the front side on #1, #3, #5 and #6 to go with a
bogey on the fourth. Vu gained three more strokes on #10, #12 and #14
to get to 6-under before losing shots on #16 and #18. Senior Louise Ridderström is tied for eighth at 1-under (71). She made birdies on the fifth and the ninth before dropping her only shot on #18.
Junior Hadas Libman is tied for 55th after shooting +6 (78). Her lone birdie was on the 14th, as she made seven bogeys. Sophomore Lydia Choi shot a non-team scoring 80 (+8), making five bogeys and a triple. Sophomore Erin Choi,
playing as an individual, started on the back nine and made six bogeys,
but came back to birdie the seventh and the eighth to finish at 4-over
(76) and in a tie for 40th.
The Bruins go off the first tee at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday in the order of Lydia Choi, Libman, Ridderström, Vu and Law. Erin Choi will start on the 10th tee at 9:12 a.m. Live scoring will be available here.
