SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The second-ranked and top-seeded Pepperdine beach volleyball team advanced through the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships this Friday afternoon at Ocean Beach Park, defeating Saint Mary’s 3-2 to open the tournament.
The Waves (17-3) opened the day winning four-of-five first sets over the Gaels (14-5) en route to Pepperidne wins on courts three, four and five to push the Waves into the WCC semifinals today at 9 a.m. against Loyola Marymount.
First to finish were the Waves’ fives pair, senior Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Sarah Seiber (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona), who absolutely dominated the sand against Hannah Liserra and Alex O’Sullivan towards a 21-12, 21-9 victory to put the team up 1-0 on the day.
Then on court four, freshmen pair Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) and Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) put down Lindsey Calvin and Emily Bible with a 21-11, 21-17 final mark to extend the Waves lead.
Pepperdine’s three’s pair, sophomore Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) and freshman Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS), then clinched the match with a 21-17, 21-19 win over Alex Salmons and Mandi Wilkerson to put the Waves up 3-0.
Senior Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and freshman Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) played on court one, but eventually fell in two sets to DAlas Dodd and Lindsey Knudsen.
Closing out the first day of the tournament, junior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and freshman Kaity Bailey (Ojai, Calif./Villanova Preparatory School) put Mary Hernandez and Payton Rudd down 21-16 in the first set, before dropping 22-24 and 13-15 in the final two sets for the final 3-2 Waves win.
Next, the Waves will continue the West Coast Conference tournament on April 23 (today) at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, Calif. as Pepperdine takes on sixth-seeded Loyola Marymount in the semifinals at 9 a.m.
