LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The
Whittier College Women's Lacrosse team saw their losing skid extend to
five games Wednesday as they dropped a tight 14-9 decision on the road
against Occidental College.
Despite
a strong second half, the Purple & Gold were unable to make-up the
five goal differential from the first 30:00 minutes as they dropped to
7-9, 1-8 SCIAC
becoming tied with the Tigers for fifth place in the Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.
Angelina Cuevas (Long Beach, Calif.) and Rebekah Delledera (Livermore, Calif.) swapped goals early with Oxy as the game remained tied at 2-2 at the 18:02 mark.
But Oxy would go on an ensuing 6-1 run over the next eight minutes that moved the score to 8-3.
The lone Poet goal during the spurt came from the freshmen combo of Lauren Tudor (Bellevue, WA) from Lexie Meanor (Sewickley, PA).
Gabby Boller (Howell, NJ) would add the last goal of the half that kept the Poets in striking distance at intermission.
The second half proved a defensive battle with each team adding five goals apiece. Cuevas got the scoring started for WC with an unassisted goal in the first three minutes. Four unanswered from Meanor, Emily Hansen (Seal Beach, Calif.), and
Tudor would pull the Poets within four with under ten minutes to play
but these would be the last goals tallied as Oxy would hold on for the
five goal victory.
E. Hansen finished the game with two goals and three groundballs, while R. Delledera had a goal and five groundballs. Cuevas registered two goals and an assist with two groundballs and two draw controls.
Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) played all 60:00 finishing with 14 saves against 28 shots.
Whittier wraps up their 2016 regular season tomorrow, Saturday, April 23 when they take on Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 4:00pm.
