Griffin Canning (5-4) earned the win for UCLA, striking out six while allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits over 6.2 innings. Matt Krook (3-2) got the loss for the Ducks, allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit with five walks in 1.2 innings. Moises Ceja (1) earned his first career save with a scoreless, two strikeout effort in the ninth.
The Bruin offense racked up five hits and drew five walks on the evening. Eric Filia (1-for-3, 2 R,
RBI, 2 BB) led the way, reaching base three times with a team-high two runs and one RBI.
UCLA (17-18, 7-9) benefitted from some shaky Oregon pitching in the first inning to grab the early lead on the Ducks. Oregon starter Krook walked three and hit one batter in an inning which saw the Bruins push four runs across. The only hit in the inning was a Luke Persico RBI-single as UCLA took a, 4-0, lead after one.
The Bruins plated two more in the fourth to extend their lead to six. Filia drove in a run with an RBI-single to center and another run was forced across with a hit by pitch to lift UCLA to a 6-0 edge.
Oregon (17-14, 7-6) bounced back with a pair in the fifth to climb back within four. Pinch-hitter Phil Craig-St. Louis took Canning deep to right for a two-run home run, his third long ball of the season.
The Ducks backed that up with another run in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kyle Kasser hit a hard ground ball off of Canning’s glove for an infield single to plate a run. However, further damage was averted as Hunter Virant came on to get the inning-ending groundout and maintain the Bruins’ three-run cushion.
That lead would hold as Tucker Forbes and Moises Ceja went on to throw two scoreless and hitless innings to finish off a, 6-3, UCLA win.
