LOS ANGELES — Sierra Slack made sure the Occidental women's lacrosse team was at its best during its last home game of the season.
The sophomore from Vorhees, N.J. scored five goals, including four in
the second half, as the Tigers pulled away from Whittier for a 14-9
wire-to-wire win at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday.
Ciara Byrne added three goals, two caused turnovers and two ground balls for Oxy. Shai Goodman chipped in two goals, an assist, four ground balls and two draw controls.
Madi Hallare scored two goals, and Rebecca Reese and Mackenzie Wright each added one, rounding
out Oxy's scoring.
Whittier was led by Angelina Cuevas, Emily Hansen and Lauren Tudor, who all scored two goals.
The Tigers went on a 7-2 run to end the first half and go up by a commanding 9-4 score.
Oxy came out hot at the beginning of the second half too, extending a
13-5 lead on back-to-back goals by Slack less than 10 minutes in.
Whittier chipped away, cutting the lead to four by the 10-minute
mark, but couldn't get closer as Oxy's defense shut down the Poets for
the remainder of the game.
Brita Loeb helped Oxy dominate the draw 20-5, winning seven herself. The Tigers also grabbed 28 ground balls to Whittier's 20.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 7-9, tying with
Whittier for fifth at 1-8 in SCIAC play with one game to go. The Tigers
are likely to own the points against tiebreaker if both teams finish
with the same record.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on April 23 at 1 p.m.
