Waves Split Doubleheader to Take Series at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team split its doubleheader at Santa Clara on Sunday, winning the late game in wild fashion, 10-7, after dropping the opener, 5-4.

The split gives the Waves a 2-1 win in the three-game West Coast Conference series. Pepperdine moves to 15-15 overall, 6-6 WCC, while Santa Clara falls to 14-16, 3-6.

The Waves trailed 6-0 after one inning in the late game, but fought all the way back for the dramatic win. Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) would hit two homers and drive in five runs in the game, including the game-winning three-run homer in the seventh inning.

After Pepperdine fought all the way back to tie the game, Santa Clara went up 7-6 with a run in the
fifth. Jefferson would smack the three-run shot over the left field wall with two outs in the top of the seventh to put the Waves up 9-7. Pepperdine added a run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

The Broncos scored six runs in the bottom of the first on four hits, including a grand slam by Tyler Meditz. The home team would score just one run the rest of the way.

Jefferson hit a two-run shot to get the Waves back on track in the top of the second. Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) followed with his second solo home run of the day and then Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) tripled in a pair of runs to make it a 6-5 game after two innings. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) tied it up with a solo-homer of his own in the third.

Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) got the win for Pepperdine after entering in the fifth inning. Garcia gave up no runs and just one hit in his 3.1 innings pitched. Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) settled in after his rough start to the game, giving up just two more hits over his next 3.1 innings. Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) picked up his third save of the year, throwing the final 1.1 innings to seal the win.

Jefferson was 2-for-4 at the plate with his season-high five RBI and Anderson was 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

The Waves dropped the opener despite making a comeback from an early three-run deficit. Santa Clara went up 4-1 after three innings of play thanks to three run-scoring singles in the first and third innings. The Waves scored their lone early run on a Rodriguez homer in the second.

Pepperdine pulled to within one in the fifth when Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) doubled in two runs to make it a 4-3 game. The Broncos scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning to get a run back, though. A sacrifice fly in the sixth inning again made it a one run game, but that was a close as the Waves came.

Pepperdine got runners in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn’t score either time.

Matt Crowder (Atherton, Calif.//BYU) led the Waves at the plate, going 4-for-5 in the early game. Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) took the loss on the mound, while Steven Wilson got the win for Santa Clara.

The Waves will be back in action on Tuesday when they host USC for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
