Pepperdine Men's Golf Takes Fifth Place at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Roy Cootes tied for eighth place at the 70th annual Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday, leading the Pepperdine men’s golf team to a solid fifth-place finish in the Waves’ final event before next week’s West Coast Conference Championships.

In the play-six, count-five event at the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club, the Waves finished with a three-day total of 1,065 (348-357-360).

All four teams finishing ahead of #39 Pepperdine were Pac-12 schools ranked in Golfstat’s top 26,
including #9 Stanford and #1 USC, which finished 1-2. The Waves posted wins over #7 Arizona State, #21 San Diego State and #25 Washington, plus UCLA and Arizona to go 4-4 against the Pac-12.

The Waves now turn their attention to the defense of their 2015 WCC crown, as the league championship will be contested next Monday through Wednesday (April 18-20) at the Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, Calif.

Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) posted his second below-par round in three days and tied for eighth with a 1-under 209 (69-71-69). He had five birdies on Wednesday and tied for the team high with 13 overall.

Freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) both tied for 21st place with 3-over 213s. Theegala shot 69-73-71, had four birdies today and tied Cootes with 13 for the tournament. Geibel shot 71-70-72 and wound up the event with 38 pars, one shy of the most by anyone in the field.
Junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) tied for 37th at 218 (71-72-75), senior Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) tied for 42nd at 219 (68-71-80) and freshman Lorenzo Magagnin (Treviso, Italy) tied for 77th place at 231 (79-79-73).
