Pepperdine Men's Golf Off to Strong Start at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Led by a 2-under 69 by Frederick Wedel, the Pepperdine men’s golf team is off to a strong start at the 70th annual Western Intercollegiate, as the Waves are in fourth place after Monday’s first round.

In the play-six, count-five event at the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club, the #39 Waves shot an opening-round 348, putting them seven back of #26 Oregon, three behind #9 Stanford and two back of #1 USC. Pepperdine is currently ahead of four top 25 teams (#7 Arizona State, #15 California, #21 San Diego State and #25 Washington).

The second round is Tuesday and the third and final round is Wednesday.

Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), a senior, is tied for seventh place. Wedel was 2-over after 10 holes but bounced back with four birdies down the stretch. It’s his 42nd career below-par round (#5 all-time at Pepperdine).

Freshmen Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) are both tied for 13th place after 1-under 69s. Theegala had six birdies on the day and Cootes had three.

Juniors Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) and Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) are both tied for 29th place after 1-over 71s. Geibel had five birdies and McManus had two.

Freshman Lorenzo Magagnin (Treviso, Italy) is tied for 83rd place after a 79.
