No. 61 BYU Edges out No. 56 Pepperdine 4-2

PROVO, Utah. – The 56th-ranked Pepperdine men’s tennis team put in a bout at the BYU Indoor Tennis Facilities this Friday afternoon, eventually falling 4-2 to 61st-ranked Brigham Young University.  After dropping the doubles point early, the Waves battled back in singles play to close the gap, but the home team’s advantage played out and the Cougars clinched the victory.

BYU (17-5, 6-1 WCC) first picked up wins on courts one and three over the Waves (10-9, 4-2 WCC) to go ahead 1-0 on the day.

The Cougars’ three’s competitor, Andrey Goryachkov, then had the advantage over junior Stefan
Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./Fusion Academy) as he amassed a 6-1, 6-2 victory to put the home team up 2-0 on the day.

Pepperdine’s junior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) defeated Shane Monroe 7-5, 6-4 in the number one singles position to close the gap to a one-point Waves’ deficit.  Sophomore Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) took his match with John Pearce to three sets after winning the first 6-3 and dropping the second 3-6.  The two competitors then went point-for-point until late in the set where the Cougar pulled away to eventually win 6-4 and put BYU up 3-1 overall.

Sophomore Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) would fight to the finish in his match with Keaton Cullimore, though, after splitting his first two sets with 6-3 results and heading into the third.  He and Cullimore battled it out, with each grabbing an edge in the set but finding the set tied 6-6 to put it to a tie-breaker with the match on the line.  Pane was up to the challenge and edged out his competitor with an 8-6 decision in the tie-break set to put the score 2-3 with the Waves still chasing the tie.

After going down 4-6 in the first set and fighting back to a 6-3 second set win, freshman Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) then faced his opponent, Jeremy Bourgeois, in a third set to again decide the dual’s fate.  Despite the Waves’ effort, the Cougar took the 6-1 win to put the Waves under 4-2 on the day.

Junior Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) also played Aidan Carrazedo, falling 6-7 in the first set with a 4-7 tie-break result and seeing an even 1-1 mark in the second set before the match was called.

Next, the Waves will continue the road trip at San Diego at 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 17).  Follow @PeppTennis on Twitter for the most immediate updates and find results, recaps and more on PepperdineSports.com.
