MALIBU, Calif. – The 10th-ranked
Pepperdine women’s tennis squad dominated the courts at Ralphs-Straus
Tennis Center this Friday afternoon, closing out the most recent West
Coast Conference victory with a 7-0 sweep over Brigham Young University.
The
Waves (16-2, 6-0 WCC) defeated BYU (4-14, 2-4 WCC) in doubles play with
wins on courts two and three to start competition, and then continued
to win all six singles matches by two-set decisions to close out the
afternoon.
In doubles, the home team’s 16th-ranked duo senior Matea Cutura and junior Christine Maddox
downed Nicolette Poulsen and Savannah Ware 6-1 on court two to pick up
the first Waves’ win of the afternoon. On court three, 80th-ranked
freshman Dzina Milovanovic and sophomore Laura Gulbe
were the next to strike and clinch the doubles point for the team, as
the pair took down Natella Nabieva and Taylah Beckman with a 6-3 final
mark to put the Waves up 1-0 heading into singles play.
The
winning would not stop there for Pepperdine as the matches on courts
three and five were the first to finish in singles, almost
simultaneously. Milovanovic first faced off with Poulsen on three,
taking down the Cougar with 6-3, 6-2 set decisions. Then unior Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai put the Waves up 3-0 on the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Nabieava on court five.With
the momentum on Pepperdine’s side, courts two, four, one and six would
shortly complete the sweep for the Waves. First, Gulbe clinched the
overall win with a pair of 6-2 set wins over Toby Miclat. Then, Cutura
dominated Ware on court four towards a 6-3, 6-2 victory with only two
courts left to finish.Fifth-ranked freshman Luisa Stefani
would be the next to win and bring the Waves up 6-0 on the day with a
7-5, 6-3 win over Mayci Jones on court one. To close out the afternoon,
senior Michaela Capannolo clinched the 7-0 sweep with a well-played 7-6 (4), 6-3 win on court six. Next, Pepperdine will host San Diego at noon on Saturday (April 16) at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. Seniors Matea Cutura, Michaela Capannolo and Danielle Feneridis will be honored 10 minutes prior to doubles starts. Stay
