LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 UCLA won its 20th and 21st consecutive duals on Wednesday afternoon with a 5-0 win over No. 6 Long Beach State (18-4) and a 3-2 win over No. 4 USC (17-8) in the second game of the doubleheader at Sunset Canyon Beach Volleyball Courts.
The Bruins, who improved to 26-3 on the season on "Senior Day," now head to Stanford, Calif., to take part in the Stanford West Coast Classic at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium on April 7-8. The Bruins will open with No. 20 Saint Mary's (11-7) on Saturday, April 7 at Noon and conclude the day with No. 5 Cal Poly (19-3) at 3:00 p.m. PT. The Bruins will conclude the tournament on Sunday with Pacific (6-7) at 9:00 a.m. PT and end the day with No. 13 Stanford (12-6) at Noon on the Pac-12 Network.
Both matches were televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Bruins opened the day by winning the first flight against the 49ers on courts four and five in straight sets. Junior Izzy Carey and freshman Megan Muret defeated LBSU's Hannah Matt and Marisa Ramsey, 21-12, 21-15, on court five while freshman Mac May and senior Elise Zappia defeated Kristyna Adamcikova and Nicci Reinking on court four, 21-16, 21-17, to take a 2-0 lead in the dual.
UCLA sealed the match as juniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara defeated the 49ers' Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto on court one, 21-12, 21-14, to give the Bruins a 3-0 advantage. Also in the second flight on court two, sophomore Lily Justine and junior Sarah Sponcil shook off three set points in the opening set and ended up defeating LBSU's Anete Brinke and Sasha Karelov, 25-23, 19-21, 15-12 to make it 4-0 UCLA.
The Bruins completed the 5-0 sweep in the third flight on court three as junior Zana Muno and sophomore Savvy Simo defeated Megan Kruidhof and Zoi Konstantopoulou in straight sets, 21-14, 22-20.
In the nightcap, UCLA played host to its crosstown rival for the first time on its home court and defeated the Trojans for the second time this season. It marked UCLA's third win over the Trojans in the teams' last four meetings and was the seventh time in the last eight matchups that the final score was 3-2.
Flight one again consisted of matches from the bottom of the lineup with Carey and Muret picking up the first point of the dual on court five with a 21-19, 21-10 win over Trojan seniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer to extend their winning streak to 21 matches. Meanwhile on court four, May and Zappia won a three-set thriller, defeating USC's junior Katrina Kernochan and senior Alexandra Poletto, 21-18, 19-21, 16-14, to earn the second dual point and increasing their winning streak to 15 matches.
UCLA secured the dual on the second flight on court two when Justine and Sponcil ran their winning streak to six matches by taking down USC's pair of senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater, 21-15, 21-17.
On court one, USC's tandem of junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina rallied for a three-set win over the McNamaras, 16-21, 21-17, 16-14, snapping the Bruins' 16-match winning streak at the top court.
With the dual already decided, the Trojans' sophomore Joy Dennis and freshman Haley Hallgren defeated Muno and Simo in three sets, 21-19, 17-21, 15-8, snapping the Bruin duo's 17-match winning streak and provide the 3-2 final score in favor of the Bruins.
