WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team got back on track Wednesday night at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center as they held off the University of La Verne 10-6 to keep their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post-Season Tournament hopes alive.
The Purple & Gold snapped their four game losing skid and avenge their earlier loss to the Leopards, while improving to 7-14, 5-5 SCIAC.
It was back and forth all game but the difference came down to the final eight minutes where WC shutout ULV 3-0 to full off the home victory.
The Leopards held a 1-0 advantage after the first quarter and then tacked on another two in the early stages of the second.  That lead would soon evaporate however as Kendyl Riley (Huntington Beach, Calif.) would respond with back to back connections followed by an unassisted tally from Bianca Vera (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Then with under 1:00 to play in the half, ULV was able to take the advantage right back as Bustamante would connect to move the score to 4-3 at intermission.
Whittier and La Verne swapped goals early in the third to keep the deficit at one but the rest of the frame it was all Purple & Gold as they would outscore ULV 3-1 with goals from Marina Daroca Bazan (Barcelona, Spain), Veronica Ramirez (La Habra, Calif.), and Riley to take their first lead of the game at 7-6.
In the fourth, the Poets continued to pour it on tacking on another three goals, but stepped up big on the defensive end holding the Leopards scoreless.  Ramirez registered the first goal at the 7:39 mark converting a 5-meter and Lindsay Shoaff (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Gregorio put the game out of reach soon after.
Whittier outshot La Verne 33-18 and was 1-8 on power-plays.  Noa Cravens (Laie, HI) put together her best game of the season totaling six saves and five steals.  Riley led the offense with three goals and two steals, while Gregorio and Ramirez added two goals and an assist.
