LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of California San Diego women's tennis team collected an 8-1 victory over West Region rival and 28th-ranked Point Loma Thursday afternoon at Northview Courts.
With its third-consecutive win, UC San Diego improved to 11-9. Point Loma dropped to 15-5.
The Tritons won all six singles matches and took two of three doubles contests.
At the top singles spot, Ashley Chao (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS), ranked 21st nationally, defeated No. 53 Nikki Newell in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-2. It was the 12th win of the season for the junior.
Becky Chou, ranked 55th, upset No. 17 Carolina Cuevas by scores of 6-4 and 6-4 at No. 2. Chou has now won her last four singles matches.
No. 40 Alexandra Weil topped No. 54 Shelby Groenveld in the longest match of the day at No. 3. Scores were 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 10-7.
Jasmine Hosseini won at No. 4, Valeria Corral (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) won at No. 5, and Chloe Wight was victorious at No. 6. Hosseini improved to 12-2 on the year, the best record on the team.
In No. 1 doubles, the 30th-ranked pair of Chao and Chou rolled past Groenveld and Michelle Torres, 8-2. Weil and Madison Hale took down Cuevas and Gabi Armas, 8-6, at No. 2. Both teams have won three-straight matches, with Chao and Chou holding a 13-7 season record and Hale and Weil sitting at 11-9.
UCSD is ranked third in the West Region while PLNU is seventh.
With three regular season matches remaining, UC San Diego plays at Concordia Irvine on Monday, April 9 at 2 p.m.
