UCLA Men Finish Ninth in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisc. – For the second season in a row the UCLA men’s cross country team showed its strength at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, held Friday morning on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.

The men finished ninth overall and were led once again by senior Lane Werley, who placed 14th. The women placed 34^th and unleashed freshman Carolina Johnson, who shined in her debut and finished 26^th overall.

For the second consecutive week on a national stage Werley paced the Bruins. The senior crossed the line in a time of 23:49.9. Senior Sergey Sushchikh ran second for UCLA and was 68^th overall with a time of 24:16.5 to lead a pack of Bruins that included Jonah Diaz (78^th, 24:20.3), Myles Smith (86^th, 24:23.7) and Austin O’Neil (88^th, 24:24.2).

Senior Nick Hartle finished 129^th with a time of 24:36.7 while the Bruins were rounded out by Sean Davis in 187^th place with a time of 25:01.1.

On the women’s side, Johnson didn’t take long to make an impression. The newcomer was 26^th with a time of 20:15.4, in her first race of her collegiate career.

Emily Scharmann ran number two for the Bruins as she placed 169^th with a time of 21:38.7. Aliya Shirif was 189^th with a time of 21:47.6 while Roni Yamane was right behind in 190^th with a time of 21:48.0.

Fresman Julia Rizk was 225^th in a time of 22:25.6 and Jessica Cushing-Murray finished 232 with a time of 22:40.3 while Sabrina Seay rounded out the UCLA top-7 with a time of 23:01.4 in 237^th place.

The Bruins will stay local next week as they will compete in the Titan Invitational. The meet that is hosted by Cal State Fullerton, will be held on Friday, Oct. 23 and begin at 4:45 p.m.

UCLA Track Announces 2016 Schedule

LOS ANGELES – UCLA director of track and field Mike Maynard announced the 2016 schedule. The Bruins will compete in six indoor meets and then head to an outdoor slate that features 12 meets, including five at Drake Stadium.

“We are excited about our competition schedule for the upcoming 2016 indoor and outdoor seasons,” Maynard said.

UCLA opens the season at a familiar spot, competing at the NAU Team Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Jan. 16. After the multi athletes head to Kansas State on Jan. 22, UCLA travels to Lincoln, Neb., for the prestigious Frank Sevigne Husker Invite on Feb. 5.

Six Bruins Named to All-Century Team

SAN FRANCISCO – Sixteen players and one coach who excelled at the collegiate level were named to the Pac-12 All-Century Water Polo team on the latest episode of Pac-12 Sports Report Monday evening.

The all-century team is comprised of seven driver/attackers, seven field/utility/2M and two goalkeepers.

The voting panel, which consisted of former players, coaches and members of the media, was highlighted by some of the true authorities in the sport of men’s water polo. These included Chris Dorst, former Stanford player, 1984 Olympic silver medalist and Pac-12 Network analyst, Dan Leyson, former USA men’s assistant coach, USC player, UCLA coach and current UC Davis head coach, and James Smith of TotalWaterPolo.com.

UCLA Blanks San Diego State, 4-0

LOS ANGELES – In a dominant effort, the UCLA Bruins used four second-half goals to shutout the San Diego State Aztecs, 4-0, on Monday evening at Drake Stadium. Freshman Jose Hernandez led the way with a pair of goals, while Seyi Adekoya and Stephen Payne each pitched in one apiece. The opening three goals were scored in a span of just one minute and 32 seconds.

“Tonight was a good performance,” said UCLA Head Coach Jorge Salcedo. “We created numerous goal-scoring opportunities and the four goals were good goals. We had a solid performance throughout the 90 minutes and we look forward to a very competitive and important match against Stanford on Friday night.”

Collier Wins Burbank City Amateur

BURBANK, Calif. - Sophomore Tyler Collier won the Burbank City Amateur Golf Championship last weekend by three shots. Collier had a three-day score of 208 (-5) at De Bell Golf Club.

Collier was up eight shots after two rounds before holding on to the victory after a 2-over 73 on Sunday (Oct. 11). Collier, out of Chico, Calif. and a transfer from Oregon State, had a busy amateur season this summer with a round of 32 showing at the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur and a T-20 at the Sahalee Players Championship. Collier will be eligible to play for the Bruins for the 2016 portion of their schedule.

UCLA, ASU Tie 1-1 in a Scorcher

With temperatures hitting 95 degrees at kickoff, UCLA and Arizona State battled to a 1-1 tie over 110 minutes at Drake Stadium.

Both goals were scored early in the game, with Kodi Lavrusky netting her second goal in as many games at 8:26 to give UCLA the early lead. Lavrusky took a pass from MacKenzie Cerda outside the box and launched a beauty to the upper right corner for her third goal of the year.

No. 1 UCLA Clobbers No. 4 California

MALIBU, Calif., -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 16-0 on the year with a 13-8 win over No. 4 California (14-3) in the semifinals of the 2015 Kap7 SoCal Invitational on Sunday morning.

The Bruins were led by junior Ryder Roberts, who scored a game-high three goals. UCLA improved to 79-65-1 all-time against California, picking up its fifth-straight win over the Golden Bears.

California's Johnny Hooper scored the match's first goal (5:36) to put the Golden Bears up 1-0. It would be Cal's only lead of the game as UCLA would reel off four straight goals and never trail again. Sophomore Matt Farmer (3:56) and freshman Spencer Farrar (2:21) each scored on counter attacks to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead at the end of one.

UCLA exploded for five goals in the second period to build a 7-3 lead by halftime. Redshirt freshman Warren Snyder scored a power play goal for the Bruins to push the lead to 3-1 (6:14) and then Roberts scored UCLA's fourth-straight (5:27) with a goal from the front court. Cal would trim the lead to 4-3 with a front court score from Nicholas Carniglia (5:07) and a penalty score by Farrel South (4:46). But UCLA would reel off three straight goals, two by junior Patrick Fellner (power play at 4:23 and front court score at 2:58) and a goal from the front court by sophomore Max Irving (3:31).

Cal scored the first goal of the third period (6:34) to cut the lead to 7-4, but the Bruins scored three more in a row to take a commanding 10-4 advantage. Junior Gordon Marshall made a great turn at set and powered in his first goal (6:19) and then senior Anthony Daboub scored from the front court (4:57). Roberts then scored his second of the match on a counter (3:38). Odysseas Masmanidis scored a penalty goal (3:24) for Cal to cut the lead to 10-5. But UCLA tacked on two more goals to end the third with a 12-5 lead. Junior Chancellor Ramirez scored on a counter (2:41) and then Roberts completed his hat trick with a power play score (1:01).

The Bruins got a goal from the front court by sophomore Alex Roelse (5:48) to open the scoring in the fourth, leading 13-5. UCLA went on autopilot after that, burning the clock on all offensive possessions, holding on for a 13-8 win.

Junior Garrett Danner played all four periods in the cage for UCLA, registering 12 saves while allowing eight goals (three by penalty). He was also credited with three steals. Lazar Andric registered 17 saves, but allowed 13 goals in the loss for California.

UCLA went 3-for-10 on power plays while California went 0-for-6. The Bruins did not attempt a penalty shot while California went 3-for-4.

The Bruins advance to the finals where they will face No. 2 USC for the first time in 2015 at 5:20 p.m. at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

UCLA Upends UC Irvine, 13-4

MALIBU, Calif., -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 15-0 on the year with a 12-4 win over No. 7 UC Irvine (10-3) in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Kap7 SoCal Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Bruins were led by senior Anthony Daboub, who tied his career-high with three goals against the Anteaters. UCLA improved to 74-59-1 all-time against UC Irvine.

UCLA exploded for six goals in the first period and never looked back, cruising to an easy victory.

UCLA Alumnus Dave Meyers Passes Away

Dave Meyers, a three-year UCLA basketball letterwinner, passed away Friday, Oct. 9, after a nearly year-long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family members at his home in Temecula, Calif., and was 62 years old.

Meyers was a three-year basketball letterwinner for UCLA under head coach John Wooden from 1973-75, helping lead the Bruins to NCAA titles in 1973 and 1975. He served as the Bruins’ team captain in 1975, his senior season.

Last March, Meyers was inducted into the Pac-12 Hall of Honor during the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas. He was also inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. Last season, he was able to join his former UCLA teammates during a Bruins’ home game in Pauley Pavilion on March 1, as UCLA celebrated the 40th anniversary of their 1975 NCAA Championship.

A senior and All-American leader on the Bruins’ 1975 squad, Meyers helped lead UCLA to its 10th NCAA title that season after averaging 18.3 points and 7.9 points per game on Coach Wooden’s final NCAA title-winning squad. Meyers was the No. 2 selection in the 1975 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Meyers was part of a five-man trade that brought Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the Lakers from the Milwaukee Bucks. He played for Milwaukee from 1976 through 1980. Following his NBA career, Meyers became a school teacher in Lake Elsinore, Calif., and taught for more than 30 years.

A standout player at Sonora High School (La Habra, Calif), Meyers earned CIF Player of the Year honors and prep All-America acclaim as a senior when he averaged 23 points and 16 points per game.

As a freshman for the Bruins in 1972, Meyers earned the Seymour Armond Memorial Award as the most valuable player on the freshman team, leading that squad to a 17-5 record as the Bruins’ No. 2 scorer (20.7 ppg).

As a sophomore in 1973, his first year on the varsity squad, Meyers came off the bench and averaged 4.9 points and 2.9 rebounds. UCLA’s team posted a perfect 30-0 record that season, as Meyers was named the outstanding defensive player of the year (Irv Pohlmeyer Memorial Trophy).

Meyers averaged 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game during his junior season (1973-74), leading the Bruins to a 26-4 overall record. That season, he was honored with UCLA’s Bruin Bench Award, bestowed upon the player with the most improvement in all-around play and mental attitude.

Meyers is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda, and his adult children – daughter, Crystal, and son, Sean. His older survivors include his mother, Pat, and eight siblings – Ann Meyers Drysdale, Patty Meyers, Mark Meyers, Cathy Meyers, Jeff Meyers, Susan Meyers, Coleen Lindsey and Bobby Meyers.

UCLA Harrison Falls at ITA Championships

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In a rematch of last year’s Pac-12 singles championship, UCLA senior Catherine Harrison (No. 22) fell in the first round of main draw singles to Cal’s Klara Fabikova (No. 16) at the 2015 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships on Thursday.

The last time the two met, Harrison swept Fabikova in straights to become the third Bruin in as many years to take home the Pac-12 title in Ojai.  This time around, however, Fabikova came out on top after Harrison forced a third set.

Although action has ended for UCLA at the All-American Championships, three Bruins head to Long Beach to compete in the Long Beach State Invitational this weekend.  The tournament gets underway Friday at 10 a.m. with the first round of doubles, followed by one round of singles action, then more doubles at 3:30 p.m.

At 11 a.m. on Friday, sophomore Kristin Wiley will face Dane Vorster (PSU) while sophomore Maia Magill takes on GCU’s Susie Baklini.  In her debut for the Bruins, freshman Cameron Patterson will battle CSUN’s Kristen Poei at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Saturday's action begins with doubles at 9 a.m., followed by singles action the rest of the day. Championship and consolation matches will be held on Sunday morning with doubles at 9 a.m. and singles at 11 a.m.

The tournament is single-elimination format, with all players and doubles pairs guaranteed a minimum of two matches. Upon elimination, players can sign up for additional matches.

Bruins Think Pink vs. Arizona Friday
UCLA (5-6, 1-2 in the Pac-12) will host 15th-ranked Arizona (8-2-1, 2-1-0) on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7pm in its annual Breast Cancer Awareness game. The Bruins will be wearing special pink uniforms, which will be auctioned off online following the game, with proceeds going towards breast cancer awareness and research. Fans wearing pink can receive free admission to the game.

Arizona has played five ranked opponents in its last six games, going 2-2-1 in those contests, with 1-0 victories against No. 21 Washington and No. 23 California. The Wildcats dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision to Stanford in their last game. Gabi Stoian leads the team in scoring with six goals, five assists and 17 points. She is tied for first in the Pac-12 in assists and ranks second in goals and points.

The Bruins are 20-1 all-time against the Wildcats and have won 10 in a row in the series, including last year’s 6-0 win in Westwood. Arizona’s lone win came in 2004, 1-0 in Tucson.

UCLA Jones & Yueill Earn U-20 USMNT Call-Up

CHICAGO, Ill. – UCLA freshmen Malcolm Jones and Jackson Yueill are two of 21 players that have been called to represent the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team at the Four Nations Tournament in Germany.

The team was defeated by Germany in the tournament opener on Oct. 6 and will look to bounce back against Scotland on Oct. 9, before concluding against Mexico on Oct. 12.

Both Jones and Yueill have extensive National Team experience, each serving as consistent members of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team before coming to campus this fall. The call to the U-20’s represents the first such call-up to this level for both players.

In the history of the program, UCLA players have logged 476 international caps for the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team, led by Carlos Bocanegra’s 23 caps.

Jones, a defender, has appeared in eight games (two starts) this season for the Bruins. The Chino Hills, Calif. native has scored one goal, netting the game-winning goal in UCLA’s opening match of the season against New Mexico. His two points trail just Jose Hernandez and Yueill among Bruin freshmen. Jones and Michael Amick are the only two defenders who have scored goals through the first ten games for UCLA this season.

Yueill, a midfielder, has appeared in all ten games (eight starts) this season for the Bruins. The Bloomington, Minn. Native is third on the team with nine points, logging three goals and three assists. His three assists trail just Abu Danladi for second most on the team. Yueill scored the game-winning goal against Cal Poly on September 18 and scored on a penalty kick in the Bruins’ most recent victory at Washington last Sunday.

Hernandez Named UCLA Athlete of Week

Freshman midfielder Jose Hernandez (Mexico City, Mexico) of the UCLA men’s soccer team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4.

Hernandez started both games on the road trip and scored two goals in the Bruin victory over No. 15 Washington on Sunday night. Hernandez scored his first goal on a penalty kick and rebounded his second penalty kick attempt for his second goal of the game to win it in the 107th minute. Hernandez now leads all Pac-12 freshmen in points (11) and is second on the team in points and goals (5). His second goal against Washington marks the second time this season Hernandez has delivered the winning goal in overtime for UCLA. The win also moves the Bruins’ record to 5-0-1 in their last six meetings with Washington.

This is Hernandez’s first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and his career.

Garrick Victorious at Erin Hills

ERIN, Wis. - Senior Jonathan Garrick won his second career tournament on Tuesday, finishing the Erin Hills Intercollegiate at 10-under (206) to win medalist honors by two shots. As a team, the Bruins finished in third place (-7, 857).

Garrick, who led the field in birdies made with 18, held off Oklahoma State's Wyndham Clark and SMU's Austin Smotherman to earn his first individual title since his freshman campaign (Cal Poly Invitational). Garrick was in the 60's in all three rounds, going 68-69-69. The front nine of his final round saw birdies at #1, #5 and #7 to see his score get to 10-under. Garrick evened out on the back nine with birdies at #14 and #16 and bogeys at #12 and #15 to go 3-under for the round and win the tournament, the 25th Bruin medalist under head coach Derek Freeman.

Fellow senior Jake Knapp tied Garrick's final-round score with a 3-under 69. One bad hole, a triple-bogey on #4, was not enough to derail Knapp's great round, as he birdied holes #1, #2, #9, #12, #14 and #16. Knapp improved seven shots from his first to final rounds (76-73-69) to finish in a tie for 19th (+2, 218).

Freshman Patrick Murphy tied with Knapp in the standings at +2 (73-73-72-218), shooting an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Murphy birdied his first two holes, and after a bogey on #3, added birdies on #4 and #5. On the back nine, he made a birdie at #11, but finished his round with doubles at #15 and #18.

Freshman Phil Delisi also shot an even-par 72 in his final round and tied for 24th (+4, 77-71-72-220). He had five birdies (#2, #5, #10, #14, #15) to go with bogeys on #7, #12 and #16 and a double on #4.
Sophomore Brandon Mai, playing as an individual, tied for 31st with a total of +5 (75-75-73-223). He started his round with birdies on the first two holes and another on #7 before bogeys on #8, #9 and three in a row on #13 through #15. Mai finished strong though with a birdie on the 18th to shoot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday.

Freshman Cole Madey also finished with a birdie on his last hole, but also made three bogeys on the front nine and four in a row on the back to finish in a tie for 40th (+11, 72-77-78-227).

The Bruins return to action Oct. 16-18 at the United States Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga.

Cross Country Tackles Tough Field

SEATTLE – The UCLA cross country team opened up the meat of their schedule against a talented field Friday afternoon at the Washington Invitational held at the Jefferson Park Golf Course.

The 11^th ranked UCLA men’s team placed fourth overall with 117 points as No. 5 Oregon won the meet with 52 points. The women finished 10^th overall.

The men were led by All-American Lane Werley, as the redshirt senior placed third overall with a time of 23:21.80, just six seconds off the leader.

Adekoya Named UCLA Athlete of Week

Sophomore forward Seyi Adekoya (Seattle, Wash.) of the UCLA men’s soccer team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 21-27.

Adekoya scored four goals over three games this week for UCLA. His four goals move his season-total to six, which leads the Pac-12 Conference. Adekoya has scored all six of his goals over the last four games, including a pair of two-goal performances. On Monday and Friday, Adekoya scored the first goal for the Bruins, before netting the first and second goals of the Bruins’ amazing comeback win on Sunday. The 5-foot-11 striker led UCLA to a 2-1 record last week.

This is Adekoya’s first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and his career.
