UCLA, ASU Tie 1-1 in a Scorcher

With temperatures hitting 95 degrees at kickoff, UCLA and Arizona State battled to a 1-1 tie over 110 minutes at Drake Stadium.

Both goals were scored early in the game, with Kodi Lavrusky netting her second goal in as many games at 8:26 to give UCLA the early lead. Lavrusky took a pass from MacKenzie Cerda outside the box and launched a beauty to the upper right corner for her third goal of the year.

UCLA's lead was short-lived, however, as Arizona State tied it up exactly four minutes later on a
close-range shot by Jessica Raybe. Aly Moon set the play up with a cross to Cali Farquharson in the box, and Farquharson got a touch on it that went right to Raybe, who settled the ball and fired past UCLA goalkeeper Siri Ervik for the equalizer.

Both teams were snakebitten in their attempts to score the go-ahead goal. UCLA (6-6-1, 2-2-1 in the Pac-12) had two controversial no-calls for potential handballs in the box, one in the first half, the other in the first overtime. Kristiana Konkol-Mroczkowski had a good opportunity in the 104th minute, making a nice turn and shot in the box, but her shot hit the crossbar.

The Sun Devils (4-7-1, 0-4-1) had a corner kick nearly go in during the first half, but it hit the crossbar instead, and another ball that was sent into the box went off the left post. UCLA's defense made a huge play in the 32nd minute on an ASU counterattack, with Zoey Goralski chasing down Jazmarie Mader from far back, teaming up with Madison Tye to dispossess Mader of the ball.

"That was a tough, tough game," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "It was so hot out there. Both teams were desperate. Arizona State is a team that I thought early on had a chance to win the conference, and they showed why I thought that. They're a very good soccer team."

"We finally found our way to the ball in the second half, and in overtime, I thought we deserved it," Cromwell continued. "I thought we had a handball, and Konkol hits one off the pipe. We were a bit unlucky in the end, but both teams had chances, and I said to the (ASU) head coach that it was kind of fitting that it would end in a tie. Both teams have had some unlucky games this season. It's almost like no one deserves to lose that game."

Arizona State outshot UCLA in the game, 16-12, with goalkeeper Chandler Morris making six saves. UCLA goalkeeper Siri Ervik had four saves in her second career start.

UCLA continues Pac-12 play next week with just one road game on Saturday afternoon at Oregon State.
