Vanguard Begins with Victory over La Sierra for 5th Straight Year

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions recorded their first official game of the season during a home affair against the La Sierra Golden Eagles. This marks the fifth straight year the Lions have opened the season against LSU, all ended in victory. During the span, the Lions have only given up one total goal. Today's contest ended in a 2-0 victory as Jared Gould (SO/Prescott, AZ) and Carlos Yepez (JR/Inglewood, CA) scored for the Blue and Gold.

In a game that saw the Lions record 29 shots against only four by the Golden Eagles, Vanguard did not find the back of the net until the 38^th minute. Yepez scored his first point on the season by taking the Nahum Paz (SR/Costa Mesa, CA) pass and found Gould for the shot that went into the upper left of the goal. At the intermission, La Sierra had six saves while keeper Brandon Gomez (SR/Los Angeles, CA) was tested for his lone time on the day. The Pride held a 12-2 edge in shots as both teams drew two corner kicks. As the second half ticked along, Yepez took the Isaac Pinto (FR/Mission Viejo, CA) pass at the top of the box and drilled it right into the back of the net. By the final whistle, the Lions tallied five more corner kicks and 17 more shots. In all, Vanguard had 12 shots on goal.

UCLA Draws with Utah Valley in Exhibition, 2-2

LOS ANGELES - According to UCLA, The No. 21-ranked UCLA men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw against Utah Valley in its exhibition opener on Wednesday from Marshall Field at Drake Stadium.

The Bruins jumped out to an early goal advantage in the second minute as Anderson Asiedu recieved a pass from Brian Iloski in front of the goal and slotted it passed the keeper to the right post. UCLA pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute whenSantiago Herrera was fouled in the box, setting up a penalty shot for Iloski who put his shot in the back of the net.

Utah Valley scored its first goal in the 31st minute on a shot by Alec Felix and then later Joe Barakat scored the equalizer in the 65th minute for the final score of 2-2.

UCLA will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 20, hosting Santa Ana Winds FC in another exhibition contest. The match will take place at 7 p.m. on Marshall Field at Drake Stadium. Admission is free.

Second half goals take Stags past Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a 0-0 first half, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team put together three goals within 11 minutes in the second beat Caltech 3-0. The Stags took 14 shots in each half but were able to convert on three in quick succession to put the game out of Caltech's reach.

After the game, senior Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) said, "we knew that just one person had to step up and finish in the second half and then we would be fine."

The first goal came in the 66^th minute, just 10 minutes after freshman Cole Smith (CMC) substituted into the game. Smith was set up by Lichtenberg who made a pass back into the field from the end line. Lichtenberg had made numerous deep crosses and services in the first half that for opportunities that were unrealized.

Less than two minutes later, the pair connected again, this time with Smith serving Lichtenberg. This was Lichtenberg's first goal of the season and fifth in his career.

The final goal was scored by senior Ryan Karle (CMC). Freshman Richard Harris (HMC), who played a scrappy 48 minutes in the game, played a beautiful ball from the right side into Karle. The senior was placed perfectly on the far post and finished for his second goal of the year. After a small celebration dance, the Stags returned to their positions with a 3-0 lead that would hold through final whistle.

Senior Ian Shelton (CMC) provided the final push for CMS with at least one hard shot and some skilled dribbling through the Beavers' defense.

Karle led CMS with six shots, with only one on frame. Shelton added five shots, three of which were saved by Caltech's J.d. Feist who leads the SCIAC in saves.

With the win, CMS improves to 8-3, 6-3 in SCIAC. The Stags next face the conference leader, Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On Monday night the Cal Lutheran men’s soccer team returned to their home turf at William Rolland Stadium to take on Occidental in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match. The Tigers struck first in the 39th minute and ended up taking the contest with a 2-1 victory.

The first 30 minutes were anybody’s game as both teams wrestled back and forth for possession of the ball, each team creating opportunities. Occidental had the first shot on goal in the 12th minute when Grayson Burdon fired a rocket toward the upper left corner that Eduardo Garcia dove to deflect upwards and out of play.

The Tigers found the back of the net first when Ben Simon launched a ball from 35 yards out that soared over the Kingsmen defense to give Oxy the early lead. CLU kept fighting as Jaime Alvarado fired off a shot in the 43rd minute that Oxy goalkeeper Dante Amodeo parried upwards, thwarting the Kingsmen attack. Casey Kurtenbach nearly tied the match in the 45th minute on a one-time strike off the pass from Brandon Kearney but the ball sailed just high, leaving the game at 1-0 going into halftime.

Both teams came out firing in the second half but the Tigers capitalized first and scored in the 62nd minute when Burdon scored the deflection off of a shot by Elijah Remy. The Violet and Gold however, would score a goal of their own in the 84th minute when Andres Mendoza gathered the rebound off of the shot from Diego Ortega, and sent the ball into the lower right corner.

The Kingsmen finished the match with 16 shots total, seven of them on target, while the Tigers finished with 21 total, eight on target. Garcia tallied six saves on the night for CLU.

Cal Lutheran (5-6-1, 4-5 SCIAC) will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4:00 p.m. when they head to Chapman for an away SCIAC match.

Gutierrez, Walter Lead ART U to 2-1 Victory

HAYWARD, CALIF. – Stringing together some good soccer as of late, Academy of Art (2-6-1, 2-2 PacWest) has emerged as victors in two out of their last three matches. This includes Monday night's impressive 2-1 victory over Holy Names (0-7-1, 0-5-0 PacWest).
 
In the first half, the Urban Knights were the epitome of proficiency. While only attempting two shots on goal, both found their way into the back of the net. The first came in the 15th-minute when sophomore defender Bobby Gutierrez tapped the ball to senior defender Ricardo "Ricky" Mendoza near the corner flag who found redshirt senior forward Jake Walter in front of the goal. Walter's sixth-career goal gave ART U a 1-0 lead and put the momentum squarely on their side. 
13 minutes later, the Knights went up 2-0, this time courtesy of Gutierrez. The Riverside, Calif. native made a run from midfield and was fed the ball by Walter at the top of the box. The sophomore's aim was true, freezing the Hawks' keeper and landing just inside the right post. The goal was Gutierrez's second of his career.
 
Entering the second half, Academy of Art looked to maintain their lead, but could not hold back a late goal in the 69th minute from HNU's Josiah Romero. That was all ART U would allow however, as their defense bunkered down for the remaining 20 minutes.
 
In the match, Gutierrez and Walter compiled five of the Knights eight shots while freshman midfielder Isiah Quiros had two looks of his own. Now 2-2 in conference, the Urban Knights move into a five-way tie for sixth-place. Academy of Art's road trip will continue on Thursday when they head to San Diego to face off with Point Loma who is currently 1-3 in PacWest play.

Ninth Ranked Lions Earn Tough Victory at #15 Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The ninth ranked Lions (7-2, 2-2) bounced back from the conference loss earlier this week by earning a hard fought victory over #15 Biola (7-3, 2-2). Miguel Tapia (FR/Fullerton, CA) found the back of the net off the long throw in from Zac Way (SR/Lakewood, CA) in the 44th minute to score the game winning goal.

Playing at Biola is always a tough match as the rivalry between the schools has only intensified over the last few years. Vanguard held a substantial advantage in shots taken (17-8). Juan Arellano (SR/Hawthorne, CA) tied for a match-high four shots on goal; Nahum Paz (JR/Costa Mesa, CA) was second on the team with three attempts. The Lions took more shots in the first half than the Eagles did in the full 90 minutes. After VU held a 4-1 edge in the first half, the two quads each ended with six corner kicks. Brandon Gomez (JR/Los Angeles, CA) stopped a shot in each half to earn his fifth shutout win of the year, while Igor Puglia was busy for BU stopping five attempts.

"We came into the game and set the tone early with a huge amount of effort and came out with the win," remarked Gomez.

Next Match: Saturday, October 8th at Hope International University at 2:30 p.m.

Penguins erupt for five goals vs. Hawai'i Hilo

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team broke out for its first win of the season with a 5-0 victory over Hawai'i Hilo
in the two teams' PacWest opener on Thursday.

Both teams fired seven shots but it was Dominican (1-5-0/1-0-0 PacWest) which was the more efficient team with six of those shots on goal and five finding the back of the net.  Hawai'i Hilo (/0-1-0 PacWest) placed five shots on goal.

Dominican wasted no time with Luke Raley's first collegiate goal coming from the left side in the second minute of the match. That set the tone early and Matt Case doubled the lead with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. Case assisted Austen McGregor in the 31st minute on a header to the bottom left of the net that built the lead to 3-0 before halftime.

Raley addd his second goal of the day in the 58th minute from 10 yards past the midfield after he intercepted the Vulcans free kick and caught backup goalkeeper Cassidy Dixon too far out of the net to recover. Chase Whitfield neted a goal in the 75th minute to cap the Penguins' scoring outburst.

Oscar O'Con made five saves to earn the shutout for the Penguins.

Lions Fall in 2OT Thriller

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Vanguard (5-1, 0-1), just hours after moving up to eighth in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, squared off in their GSAC opener at The Master's University (6-2-1, 1-0). Regulation time could not determine a winner until the Lions ultimately fell 1-0 in double overtime in the 106th minute.

Juan Arellano (SR/Hawthorne, CA) took four of the Pride's 14 shots, but they couldn't get a shot on frame. Similarly for the Mustangs, they blasted 14 total shots with only the game winning goal ending between the posts. Benjamin Tembo took the goal and Trevor Mangan earned the assist. Kyle Cunningham exits with a shutout in the victory with 10 saves; Brandon Gomez (JR/Los Angeles, CA), the GSAC Defensive Player of the Week, stopped six shots in the match. Vanguard took three more corner kicks than TMU (7-4).

"Master's played really well," reported Director of Soccer Randy Dodge. "It is a tough place to play and we did not adapt to the conditions. We have to respond with a better effort on Saturday."

Five Goals Lift Biola Over ACU In Sixth Shutout

Biola Men's Soccer has its best scoring night of the season, while blanking its opponent yet again.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- We've been waiting all season for Biola Men's Soccer to open the floodgates and pour out a fantastic offensive performance. Those floodgates officially opened in a big way on Tuesday night as the No. 12 Eagles won their sixth in a row with a 5-0 victory over Arizona Christian.

Biola came into the day riding a streak of five shutout victories in a row, but had just an 8-1 advantage in scoring through the first six matches of the season. That +7 scoring differential nearly doubled in one night as four different scorers powered Biola to a win in its first Golden State Athletic Conference match.

It took awhile to get going, as a Devin Leon score in the 33rd minute is what opened the scoring and was the only goal of the first half. However, as has become customary this season, the 46th minute on was a rush of offense for this Eagles' team.

Biola got goals in the 51st, 52nd, 56th and 74th minutes to build its five-goal buffer and run away with the match. Through seven games 11 of the Eagles' 13 goals have come after the start of the second half.

Leonardo Contreras, Sammy McKay, Leon again and Keaton Kerr were the Eagles' second half goal scorers. It was McKay's first goal in a Biola uniform and came on his patented header in the box. Kerr's goal, the fifth of the game, came on a penalty kick opportunity and was his second in as many games. This two-goal scoring streak comes after 29 scoreless matches. Again, look for big things from this guy over the next year and a half.

Leon's two goals and Contreras' one help the senior captains move into a tie for the team-lead in goals this season with three a piece.

Igor Puglia and Robert Sams split time in the Biola goal to help lead the team to another shutout victory. Biola is now tied for the tops in the nation with its six shutouts on the season.

The Eagles improve to 6-1 (1-0 GSAC), while the visiting Firestorm suffer their third loss in a row and drop to 4-4 (0-1 GSAC). Biola continues its extended home stretch with a match against Menlo at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The Master's University Drawing A Blank

ATHERTON, Calif. – The Master’s University women’s soccer team battled to a scoreless double-overtime draw Thursday afternoon against the UC Merced Bobcats on the campus of Menlo College in Atherton.

With the tie, TMU’s record moves to 0-1-1.

“We pushed well the second half and created some decent opportunities,” commented head coach Curtis Lewis. “We are still making some silly mistakes that we have to correct, but it will come. We need to capitalize on the things we are given and we need to be able to create even more real chances.”

Of TMU’s 13 shots and eight shots on goal, Sierra Carrasco (Riverside, CA) paced the Lady Mustangs’ offense with three shots and two shots on goal. Jessica Zubia (Bakersfield, CA) anchored TMU’s defense by grabbing four saves over 110 minutes.

“Today was a step in the right direction,” further assessed Lewis. “Now, we just need to finish the ball. We will continue moving forward and searching for our first goal.”

Hungry for their first victory, and goal, of the 2016 campaign, the Lady Mustangs will return to action on Saturday when they battle No. 23 Carroll College on the campus of Menlo College in Atherton at 11:00 a.m.

Mustangs Christen University Era With Victory

Salt Lake City, Utah - The name has changed, at least with a slight variation, but the results were much the same as The Master's University men's soccer team used a couple of early goals to beat Westminster of Utah 2-0 in the season opener for the Mustangs.

A week after the change from college to university status, the Mustangs wasted little time jumping ahead as freshman Luis Garcia-Sosa (Valencia, Calif.) took a pass from Humphrey Mahowa (Lilongwe, Malawi) 3:52 into play and ripped a shot past Griffin keeper Sean Lyne and into the far side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Just under ten minutes later (13:21), Mahowa was on the scoring end, capitalizing on a Lyne mistake to double the Mustangs' advantage.  Hanging around the Griffin goalie, who tried to make a move on him, Mahowa swiped the ball and tapped it in for one of the easiest goals of his two-plus seasons in the blue and gold and a 2-0 lead.

That was the extent of the Mustang offense and it proved to be enough for the remaining 76-plus minutes as the new-look defense played superbly in shutting out the Griffins.  Playing this game as an exhibition on their schedule, the Griffins employed nearly its entire roster and nobody could muster any offense as the Mustangs held the hosts without a shot on goal.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs posted five shots on the Griffin net, including the two by Garcia-Sosa and Mahowa that found the back of the net.  Mahowa nearly had another goal at the 26:38 mark, however, Lyne turned that one back.

In the second half, senior Zach Klindworth's (Valencia, Calif.) shot at 62:25 was saved by Max Medley and in the 88th minute (87:09) Jonathan Brown's attempt was turned away by Sean Speirs.

Following the match, 26th-year head coach Jim Rickard said, "I was pleased with our progress today.  We moved the ball well and set up some nice chances, finishing two of them.  The players are getting more comfortable with each other.  We are excited for the test on Saturday."

That "test" comes in the form of Carroll of Montana, which squares off with the Mustangs on Saturday at noon (PDT).

University of California Merced Men's Soccer Falls To Oaks 1-0

Although the score didn't fall in favor of the University of California, Merced men's soccer team Tuesday afternoon, there was definitely never a dull moment in the 1-0 loss.

The Bobcats started from behind against Menlo College in their season-opener, conceding a goal just three minutes into the game.

After the kick in the teeth to start, the Bobcats recovered and, after a fiery halftime speech, started to play their own style of soccer. Sparked by the speed of Christian Basulto and Derick Zamora, UC Merced had turned the page and was consistently putting pressure on the Menlo defense.

After a game filled with fouls, cards, and a bit of referee controversy, things hit a boiling point in the 76^th minute after a scuffle in the Menlo box led to two Oaks players being ejected, including the starting keeper.

Holding a two-man advantage, the Bobcats threw everything they could into the box for the final 15 minutes of the game.

Three different times the Bobcats hit the crossbar or post in those final 15 minutes, but it just wasn't mean to be. Despite the 13-7 advantage in shots, UC Merced were stuck with the season-opening loss.

Starting keeper Alan Ochoa made three saves in the start, while Bernardo Garcia came off the bench to start the second half and was untested.

The Bobcats will get more than a week to think about the game, as their next match won't come until September 2^nd when they travel to The Masters College. That game starts at 4:00 PM.

Three second half goals lead Menlo to 3-0 win over Willamette

ATHERTON, Calif. – Menlo College Men's Soccer remained perfect on Saturday afternoon on Wunderlich Field as they got a trio of second half goals, two from senior Ryan Onizuka and a career first goal for freshman Noah Aini.  Alex Coates-McDowall added a clean sheet to the cause as he and the Oaks defense fended the limited chances Willamette had in their attacking third. With the win, the Oaks improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Menlo played the vast majority of the game in their attacking third on Saturday, outshooting the Bearcats 16-4 including eight shots on frame. The Oaks applied consistent pressure in the first half, ripping off seven shots, but were unable to get any of them on frame which led to a scoreless 45 minutes of action.

The second half proved to be an entirely different story as it took just six minutes for Ryan Onizuka to swing things in Menlo's favor. Luis Nunez supplied the buildup and put a nice ball out in front of Onizuka who was able to get it off just before the tackle came from the Bearcat defense. His shot beat the keeper far post and the Oaks would take a 1-0 lead.

It remained 1-0 until freshman Noah Aini made his presence felt in the 72^nd minute. Having just entered the game moments before, Aini worked off yet another assist from Luis Nunez and drove home a clinical finish to make it 2-0. Just six minutes later Ryan Onizuka nabbed his second goal of the year setup by some great ball movement from Jonny Ensch and Noa Kerr. The Assist was the first for the freshman, Kerr.

Now 2-0, Menlo shifts its focus to its first road game on Tuesday when they travel north to take on former Cal Pac foe UC Merced. The Oaks and Bobcats square off at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23.

MEN’S SOCCER EDGED IN EXHIBITION AT SANTA CLARA

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara scored a pair of goals over a seven minute stretch in the first half before Sacramento State blanked the Broncos over the last 63 minutes of play in a 2-0 final Saturday night in an exhibition.

Santa Clara, an NCAA Tournament team last season that received votes in the NSCAA Preseason Top-25 poll, had a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half but the Hornets were 5-4 in shots in the second half. Sacramento State also had the only shot on goal in the second half after putting one try on goal in the first half.

Junior forward Carlos Delgadillo, who led the West Coast Conference with 10 goals last season, scored both goals for the Broncos on Saturday. He got the home team on the board in the 20th minute, taking a through ball from Andres Jimenez with a touch around Hornet goalkeeper Philip Bru.

In the 27th minute, a Jimenez corner kick was headed into the box by Parker Holland to the feet of Delgadillo for his second score of the game. Junior Cylus Sandoval had the first Hornet shot on goal just a few seconds later but was denied by Santa Clara goalkeeper Dakota Havlick.

The Broncos had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half but were permitted just two in the second half when the Hornets had six. Neither team had a shot on goal through the first 39 minutes of the second half with senior Bert Corona recording the only shot on frame in the 84th minute.

Bru finished with two saves for Sacramento State and was the only Hornet to play all 90 minutes. Corona and junior Trevor Jackson each had two shots to lead the team.

Santa Clara used two keepers in the game with both making one save while Delgadillo led all players with four shots in the game.

The Hornets open the regular season on Friday, traveling to CSU Bakersfield for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

UCLA Blanks San Diego State, 4-0

LOS ANGELES – In a dominant effort, the UCLA Bruins used four second-half goals to shutout the San Diego State Aztecs, 4-0, on Monday evening at Drake Stadium. Freshman Jose Hernandez led the way with a pair of goals, while Seyi Adekoya and Stephen Payne each pitched in one apiece. The opening three goals were scored in a span of just one minute and 32 seconds.

“Tonight was a good performance,” said UCLA Head Coach Jorge Salcedo. “We created numerous goal-scoring opportunities and the four goals were good goals. We had a solid performance throughout the 90 minutes and we look forward to a very competitive and important match against Stanford on Friday night.”

UCLA Jones & Yueill Earn U-20 USMNT Call-Up

CHICAGO, Ill. – UCLA freshmen Malcolm Jones and Jackson Yueill are two of 21 players that have been called to represent the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team at the Four Nations Tournament in Germany.

The team was defeated by Germany in the tournament opener on Oct. 6 and will look to bounce back against Scotland on Oct. 9, before concluding against Mexico on Oct. 12.

Both Jones and Yueill have extensive National Team experience, each serving as consistent members of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team before coming to campus this fall. The call to the U-20’s represents the first such call-up to this level for both players.

In the history of the program, UCLA players have logged 476 international caps for the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team, led by Carlos Bocanegra’s 23 caps.

Jones, a defender, has appeared in eight games (two starts) this season for the Bruins. The Chino Hills, Calif. native has scored one goal, netting the game-winning goal in UCLA’s opening match of the season against New Mexico. His two points trail just Jose Hernandez and Yueill among Bruin freshmen. Jones and Michael Amick are the only two defenders who have scored goals through the first ten games for UCLA this season.

Yueill, a midfielder, has appeared in all ten games (eight starts) this season for the Bruins. The Bloomington, Minn. Native is third on the team with nine points, logging three goals and three assists. His three assists trail just Abu Danladi for second most on the team. Yueill scored the game-winning goal against Cal Poly on September 18 and scored on a penalty kick in the Bruins’ most recent victory at Washington last Sunday.

Hernandez Named UCLA Athlete of Week

Freshman midfielder Jose Hernandez (Mexico City, Mexico) of the UCLA men’s soccer team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4.

Hernandez started both games on the road trip and scored two goals in the Bruin victory over No. 15 Washington on Sunday night. Hernandez scored his first goal on a penalty kick and rebounded his second penalty kick attempt for his second goal of the game to win it in the 107th minute. Hernandez now leads all Pac-12 freshmen in points (11) and is second on the team in points and goals (5). His second goal against Washington marks the second time this season Hernandez has delivered the winning goal in overtime for UCLA. The win also moves the Bruins’ record to 5-0-1 in their last six meetings with Washington.

This is Hernandez’s first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and his career.

Adekoya Named UCLA Athlete of Week

Sophomore forward Seyi Adekoya (Seattle, Wash.) of the UCLA men’s soccer team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 21-27.

Adekoya scored four goals over three games this week for UCLA. His four goals move his season-total to six, which leads the Pac-12 Conference. Adekoya has scored all six of his goals over the last four games, including a pair of two-goal performances. On Monday and Friday, Adekoya scored the first goal for the Bruins, before netting the first and second goals of the Bruins’ amazing comeback win on Sunday. The 5-foot-11 striker led UCLA to a 2-1 record last week.

This is Adekoya’s first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and his career.
