The Warriors split with ACU and take down OUAZ in a single-game matchup, all in one day
WOODLAND, Calif. - Weather in northern California makes you do some out
of the ordinary things and yesterday the softball team did just that
with a triple-header in the conference home opener at the Woodland
Sports Complex. Jessup first welcomed ACU for a doubleheader where the
teams split, followed by a game under the lights against OUAZ where the
Warriors finished 2-1 on the day.
"Taking 2 out of 3 games in a weekend is not a bad way to start conference play," head coach in her first season, Kristen Drage commented. "That being said our team knows we are capable of more than what we showed."
The Warriors started the afternoon against the Firestorm answer to the
visitors early lead in the bottom of the frame as Mahana Johns hit a
2-RBI double to tie it up. The scoring surge would continue the
following inning as Abbie Lewis and Ovens both earned an RBI and Johns knocks her second double of the game to make it 5-2 after two.
A solo shot by Lauren Garoutte and triple by Jenna Patterson
who came in to score would solidify the Warriors 7-2 lead, the
Firestorm looking for a last chance comeback with a leadoff double and
single to score a run, but it would fall short.
Warriors would take game one 7-3 as Taylor Garcia pitched her way to her second win of the season, making another appearance and win later in the day as well.
Game two against the Firestorm would go quiet for the Warriors as they
were unable to push a run across the plate and lost 11-0. Patterson
would lead the Warriors going 2-for-3 with a stolen base, followed by Natalie Basaldua, Lewis, and Brooke Sarro all also contributing a hit. Nonetheless, the Warriors would split with the Firestorm in their conference opening series, 1-1.
After an over four hour break and plenty of team bonding time, the
Warriors welcomed OUAZ for a single game in an attempt to outrun the
rain with a 9:10 first pitch.
The Warriors would come out on fire, more than likely an attempt to stay
warm, with 5 runs in the first inning as Johns again would hit a pair
of runs in. Patterson would follow as well as coming in to score on an
error by the Spirit.
The Spirit would answer back in the top of the second with three runs,
but the Warriors would shut them down for the remainder behind Garcia
collecting her third win of the season and second of the day.
A rally would spark in the fourth as the Warriors posted their final two
runs on the day as Oven hit an RBI double and Basaldua hit a single to
right field to bring her in.
"Being able to bounce back from a disappointing loss shows that we are
capable of being a mentally tough team but right now it's our
consistency that is lacking," Drage went on today, "If we can figure out
how to be consistent every inning then we are going to put ourselves in
a good position to make a run this year."
The Warriors will return to the diamond and conference matchups this
weekend as they hit the road to take on Norcal rival Menlo College on
Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
