THEATRE AT GRANITE BAY PROUDLY PRESENTS “RANKED”, A NEW MUSICAL FOR A BIZARRE ERA IN EDUCATION.

Buy your grades. Buy your future.
But what happens when the rest of the world finds out?

Theatre at Granite Bay presents a brand new musical, written and developed by Director of Theatre Arts Kyle Holmes in collaboration with the students of Granite Bay High School and local composer David Taylor-Gomes. RANKED, which runs April 4-13 with performances Thursday-Saturday all starting at 7pm, asks audiences of all ages -- What are you worth? Who decides? And what do you do when it all comes crashing down?

High school has always been tough. But in the dystopian world of RANKED, brutal competition reaches new heights as publicized academic excellence comes to define each student's worth. In the face of an intense and perverse culture of performance, Lily must come to grips with her place in the status quo as she watches friends and enemies alike destroy themselves and each other to score their way to the top of academic leaderboards. When an impossible lie is discovered, the fate of these students' futures hangs in the balance.

Kyle Holmes has written a timely and fast paced script that moves with urgency while managing to capture the complexity and nuance of being a driven and vulnerable teenager. And David Taylor Gomes provides a rich and vibrant original score that captures the frenetic energy of high school with catchy pop/rock melodies that will be stuck in your head for days.

Holmes and Taylor-Gomes started collaborating in 2012 at Granite Bay High School. RANKED will be their seventh musical as director and musical director. In 2017 they were the first amateur theatre group to produce THE UNFORTUNATES, coming off of its run at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and A.C.T. San Francisco. Later in 2017, they developed Boxed Up - The Musical, an episodic six-part musical comedy that took place at the Warehouse Artists Lofts (WAL) First Friday event, and culminated in a concert performance at Capital Stage. Taylor-Gomes wrote the music and lyrics for Boxed Up, while Holmes was one of the show’s writers. Holmes and Taylor-Gomes began writing RANKED in the spring of 2018. During the summer, they teach theatre arts together at Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp in El Dorado County.
