WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Lacrosse team had to play back to back days this past weekend but couldn't come away with a clean sweep as they fell 19-8 to St. Mary's College.
The Purple & Gold moves to 1-5, 0-4 SCIAC, while St. Mary's improves to 2-1.
Whittier never led for the game but kept it close early. Lexie Meanor (Sewickley, PA) added the first two strikes for WC, one coming on a feed from Sarah Morgan (Tustin, Calif.) and the other converting a free-position. Morgan connected at the 15:39 mark that made it a two-goal differential and Gabby Boller (Howell, NJ) would connect four minutes later that kept the advantage single digits.
But over the final ten minutes it was all Belles outscoring the Poets 4-1 that gave them an 11-5 lead at the half. The lone goal during the run for Whittier came from Morgan again.
In the second half the defense stood strong on both sides with a combined 11 goals being scored. Meanor and Morgan added the first two for the Purple & Gold moving the score to 12-7 with 17:00 minutes to play but that's as close as they would get as St. Mary's would go on to add the next five tallies that made it a ten goal differential. Boller was able to convert at the 6:10 mark despite being a person down but it wouldn't be enough to spark a comeback as St. Mary's would tack on two more with under a minute five minutes to play.
Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) once again recorded double digit saves finishing with 15 along with three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Meanor and Morgan led the offense each adding three goals and combining for three assists, while Meanor picked up seven draw controls. Ilah Hardersen (Buckley, WA) was big on both ends adding six groundballs and two caused turnovers and Emily Hansen (Seal Beach, Calif.) provided support with five groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Whittier continues with their non-conference schedule this Friday, March 15 when they host Johnson & Wales beginning at 7:00pm.
