LOS ANGELES – After going quietly in the first inning, the Cal State
Dominguez Hills baseball team's bats erupted and plated runs in every
inning to blow out Cal State LA 20-4 at Reeder Field Friday night,
ending what was a 12-game win streak the Golden Eagles had on the Toros.
The Toros, winners of four of the last five games, improve to 6-9
overall and 5-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association
(CCAA).
TOP PERFORMERS
Jeremy Ciolek – 4-for-4, 3 2B, 4 RBI
Jose Jimenez – 5-for-6, 2 2B, 3 RBI
Tristan Garnett – WP, 6 IP, 8 SO, 2 ER, 6 H, 3 BB
WHAT HAPPENED?
- It proved to be a complete slugfest for the Toros, who compiled 23 hits, six walks and 18 RBIs off of five different pitchers.
- The Toros had only the first inning in which they didn't drive in a
run. Cal State LA (4-12, 3-9 CCAA) did score the first run of the game
in its half of the inning, but Dominguez Hills responded in the second
with Grant Decatrel hitting a groundout good enough to bring Ciolek home to tie the game.
- The Toros grabbed the lead the following inning with Pierson Loska hitting a two-run shot – his conference-leading eighth homer and No. 23 and 24 RBI of the year – to give the Toros a 3-1 lead.
- Aaron Greenfield
scored in the Toros fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth
inning, but the difference in the game eventually came in the fifth,
when Ciolek hit a 2-run double and scored on Kaelan Crisosto's single to give the Toros a 7-3 lead.
- Garnett was once again outstanding on the mound. The southpaw struck
out a career-high eight batters in his six innings of work before
turning it over to the bullpen. The combination of Ian Codina, Evan Gravenmier and Jesse Galindo each tossed a shutout inning in relief.
- The Golden Eagles, who now owns a league-worse 9.48 team ERA, couldn't
find ways to get outs. The only benefit they got out of the result was
that eight of the 20 runs scored by the Toros were unearned. Using five
different pitchers, the hurlers combined for 217 pitches.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Tonight's win ends a long losing streak against the Golden Eagles. The
last time the Toros claimed a win over their crosstown rivals was 2015,
both at Toro and Reeder Fields.
- The last time Dominguez Hills put a 20 spot on the board was in 2016, when they knocked out Concordia (Calif.) 20-7 in Irvine.
- The last time the Toros beat a team by 16 runs was in 2011, when they clobbered the home-team Cal State East Bay 17-1.
