Pepperdine Eleven-Run Second Inning Leads Waves Past Cal Poly, 12-4

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team bounced back from a tough weekend at Tulane in a big way on Tuesday afternoon, scoring 11 runs in the second inning against Cal Poly to beat the Mustangs 12-4 in a non-conference contest.

Pepperdine had six hits and sent 15 batters to the plate during the second inning, allowing the Waves to cruise to the victory after that. Pepperdine moves to 4-8 with the win, while Cal Poly falls to 10-3.

The Mustangs went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first, getting a solo homer from Brett Barbier and then capitalizing after a Pepperdine error extended the inning with an RBI single from Michael Sanderson.

After going down in order in the bottom of the first, the Waves broke things open in the second. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) led things off with a single, one of two times he would reach base in the frame. Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) then drove Anderson in with a single to left. Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) drew a bases loaded walk, followed by an RBI single from Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS). Fornaci would later score on a highlight reel play when he leaped over the Cal Poly catcher to score on a grounder to third. Fornaci also capped the inning with a two-run triple to put the Waves ahead 11-2.

Kanfer posted two RBI singles in the bottom of the second and was one of five players to reach base twice in the inning for the Waves. Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) recorded a two-run single, just before Fornaci's triple.

Pepperdine finished the day with nine hits and the team's 12 runs matched a season high. The Waves also recorded three doubles in the game to match a season high.

Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) got the start on the mound and after working through a slightly rocky first inning, the freshman lefty retired 13 straight batters before exiting prior to the sixth. Lucas struck out three and walked just one to move to 1-1.

The Waves tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) double. Cal Poly scored two runs in the ninth, but never really mounted a comeback. The Mustangs posted five hits, getting a two-hit day from Kyle Marinconz.

Jarred Zill took the loss for the visitors, throwing 1.2 innings. Cal Poly would go through five pitchers on the day.

Kanfer and Lambert were each 2-for-4 at the plate, and Fornaci led the team with three RBI. Eight different Waves scored in the game, four players doing so multiple times.

The win splits the season series between the teams after the Mustangs won in San Luis Obispo on a ninth-inning walk-off single just last week.

Pepperdine is back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. in Malibu, when they open a four-game series against Columbia.

Santa Clara Women's Rowing Has Strong Showing at Davis Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the first race of the spring, Santa Clara women's rowing had a good showing at the Davis Invitational on March 6. The Broncos finished first in two races and second in three others.

The Varsity 8 was able to take first place over Davis and Mills College.

"We were able to get a good clean start and get in front of Davis," said Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz. "They pushed us all the way down the course but our crew hung tough on to their lead and was even able to open it up in the last 500 meters. The conditions (wind and tide) slowed us down time-wise, but the crew put together a good piece and I was proud of their composure despite constant pressure from Davis all the way down the course."

The Varsity Four also took first place.

"Varsity four had a great race, opening up the lead early and continuing to walk away down the course," said Wojtkiewicz. "There was a lot of gutsy racing there; they committed to the race and did not relent for a single stroke."

The JV 8 boat came in second behind Davis' A boat.

"Our JV struggled to find a good rhythm to keep up with Davis, and it is something we will continue

UCLA's Francis, Ohashi Honored by Pac-12

Senior Danusia Francis was named Pac-12 Specialist of the Week, and Katelyn Ohashi was named the Pac-12 Gymnastics Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Francis became the fifth different UCLA gymnast to win Specialist of the Week this season. She scored the Pac-12's first perfect 10 of the year, earning a 10.0 on the balance beam. It was also the first perfect 10 by a UCLA gymnast since she scored one on beam on Mar. 16, 2014, and only the ninth 10 on beam in UCLA history. Francis was flawless on the event on Sunday, performing a routine that was both graceful and difficult, ending with a stuck landing on her one-of-a-kind sideways side aerial to immediate full-twisting layout dismount. Francis, who has moved back into the No. 1 national ranking on beam, has hit 59 routines in a row without a fall, with 53 of those routines scoring 9.8 or above, and has hit 118 of 120 routines without a fall in team competition over her career. FRESNO, Calif. – Junior Annie Freman became the first women's golfer in Santa Clara history to win four individual titles after capturing the Fresno State Classic on Tuesday with a tournament 36-hole record 8-under 136. As a team the Broncos took fourth-place with a 592 (+16) total at the rain-shortened event.

After navigating the 6,217-yard, par-72 San Joaquin Country Club to a program-record 5-under 67 in Monday's first round, Freman followed with a 3-under 69 on Tuesday, holding off Fresno State's Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Boise State's Genevieve Ling, who tied for second at 5-under 139.

Freman's fourth career title also breaks a tie with Miki Ueoka, who claimed three wins during her career that ended in 2011.

Freshman Cynthia Navis did her best to lift Santa Clara to a third straight team title. Her career-low 74 on Tuesday was the next lowest score among all Broncos, however it wasn't enough. Tournament host Fresno State was an eight-shot winner over runner-up Boise State with a 577 total.

Santa Clara beat two teams ranked higher in the golfstat.com poll, including No. 95 Nevada and No. 82 New Mexico State. "This is the first time we've beaten New Mexico State in a few years," Kelly said about her 100th ranked Broncos.

"Overall, it was another great finish for the team," Kelly added. "Our scoring is becoming more consistent. I'm looking forward to seeing what the squad can do in the next few weeks."

Navis and Noda tied for 41st place at 9-over 153, while Le and Monique Riley tied for 50th at 155 (+11). Competing as an individual, Meghan Shain scored rounds of 78 and 79 to finish at 13-over 157, tied for 57th.

Waves Ousted by Saint Mary's in WCC Semifinals

LAS VEGAS -- An unstoppable first-half performance by Saint Mary's led to the end of the Pepperdine men's basketball team's stay in the West Coast Conference Tournament, as the Waves fell 81-66 in Monday's semifinals at the Orleans Arena.

The top-seeded Gaels (27-4) shot 67% in the first half and broke out to a 44-24 lead at halftime. After falling behind by as many as 24 points in the second half, the fourth-seeded Waves rallied to within 10 points late but could get no closer.

Pepperdine (18-13) will wait for Sunday (March 13) to learn its postseason fate.

"You've got to give Saint Mary's credit, they did a heck of a job," Pepperdine Coach Marty Wilson said. "They did a great job in the first half adjusting to how we had been guarding them previously. We didn't have the mindset in the first half that we needed. We talked about it at halftime and put two words on the chalkboard, `quit' or `fight.' Our guys wanted to fight and proved that in the second half. We were down 24 and cut it to 10. But then we made a couple of mistakes that took the wind out of our sails.

"I'm proud of our guys for that they've done throughout the year, and we know that this isn't the last

One out later, Bennett singled to center to plate Johnson to make it 4-1. A walk to Spaulding loaded the bases, and one out later, Sataraka drew a free pass to force in Shaw with UCLA’s fifth run.

Hit by pitches of junior Gabrielle Maurice and sophomore Madeline Jelenicki on consecutive pitches scored Bennett and Spaulding to make it 7-1. Halstead then posted her second hit of the inning, a single up the middle, to bring in Sataraka to extend the lead to 8-1. Shaw brought the mercy rule into effect with a bases-loaded walk, as Maurice scored to make it 9-1.
