MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team bounced
back from a tough weekend at Tulane in a big way on Tuesday afternoon,
scoring 11 runs in the second inning against Cal Poly to beat the
Mustangs 12-4 in a non-conference contest.
Pepperdine had six hits and sent 15 batters to the plate during the
second inning, allowing the Waves to cruise to the victory after that.
Pepperdine moves to 4-8 with the win, while Cal Poly falls to 10-3.
The Mustangs went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first, getting a solo
homer from Brett Barbier and then capitalizing after a Pepperdine error
extended the inning with an RBI single from Michael Sanderson.
After going down in order in the bottom of the first, the Waves broke things open in the second. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) led things off with a single, one of two times he would reach base in the frame. Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) then drove Anderson in with a single to left. Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) drew a bases loaded walk, followed by an RBI single from Chase Lambert
(Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS). Fornaci would later score on a highlight
reel play when he leaped over the Cal Poly catcher to score on a
grounder to third. Fornaci also capped the inning with a two-run triple
to put the Waves ahead 11-2.
Kanfer posted two RBI singles in the bottom of the second and was one of
five players to reach base twice in the inning for the Waves. Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) recorded a two-run single, just before Fornaci's triple.
Pepperdine finished the day with nine hits and the team's 12 runs
matched a season high. The Waves also recorded three doubles in the game
to match a season high.
Easton Lucas
(Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) got the start on the mound and
after working through a slightly rocky first inning, the freshman lefty
retired 13 straight batters before exiting prior to the sixth. Lucas
struck out three and walked just one to move to 1-1.
The Waves tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a Brandon Caruso
(Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) double. Cal Poly scored two runs in the
ninth, but never really mounted a comeback. The Mustangs posted five
hits, getting a two-hit day from Kyle Marinconz.
Jarred Zill took the loss for the visitors, throwing 1.2 innings. Cal Poly would go through five pitchers on the day.
Kanfer and Lambert were each 2-for-4 at the plate, and Fornaci led the
team with three RBI. Eight different Waves scored in the game, four
players doing so multiple times.
The win splits the season series between the teams after the Mustangs
won in San Luis Obispo on a ninth-inning walk-off single just last week.
Pepperdine is back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. in Malibu, when they open a four-game series against Columbia.
