LOS ANGELES — Diego Ramirez was outstanding on the hill again, Reid Gibbs keeps tearing the cover off the ball and Angelo Zorn hit a three-run bomb in the eighth inning as the Occidental baseball team swept Whittier with a 6-1 win over the Poets in Game 3 at Anderson Field on Saturday.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Zorn blasted a shot high down the right-field line. There was no question it was going to be gone, but the uncertainty was if it was going to be fair. As it sailed into the bushes on the hill above, there was a quiet moment. Then came the home run signal from the first base umpire, sending Oxy fans and the Tigers' dugout erupting into cheers.
Gibbs, Oxy's second baseman, extended his hitting streak to nine games with another big-time performance at the plate, going 4 for 5. He scored Oxy's first run in the top of the third on a single by Jake Fredrickson, and drove in the fifth run to finish off the eighth-inning rally.
Gibbs' batting average is up to .449 and he has 17 hits in his last 28 at bats.
Jared Baur also singled in a run and scored in the eighth for Oxy.
Jack Brancheau started the party in the eighth with a double off of the wall in left center, giving the Tigers a runner in scoring position with no outs.
Ramirez went eight innings, giving up just one earned run. The first year pitcher threw strikes and had hitters looking off balance for most of the game. Through 27 innings he has an ERA of 1.33.
The Poets didn't get to Ramirez until the top of the sixth inning. Whittier leadoff hitter Nick Krska reached on an infield single and then came home to tie the score later in the inning on an RBI-single off the bat of Brandon Mulrooney.
Alexander Jelloian put the pressure on Ramirez and the Tigers again in the seventh, doubling with one out to get into scoring position, but Ramirez was able to pitch out of the small trouble.
Ramirez got his way out of trouble again in the top of the eighth. The Poets got runners on first and second with one out before he struck out the next two batters looking.
Ian Vogenthaler came on to pitch a scoreless ninth and finish off the game.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC.
Whittier falls to 3-7 and 2-4.
Next Game: Oxy is back in action on Monday, playing Whitman at 11 a.m. at Anderson Field.
