TURLOCK — The Warriors finally got some timely hitting, and again with
strong relief pitching, Stanislaus State posted two come from behind
wins to sweep Cal State East Bay to take the series on Sunday.
Stanislaus State pounded out 17 hits en route to a 11-6 game one win and
used a five-run inning in the nightcap for a 6-3 win to complete the
twinbill sweep. The Warriors won three of four this weekend to improve
to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA.
Trailing 6-3 in the fifth inning of game one, the Warriors scored twice — on a Alexis Paz RBI double and a Grant Victor
sac fly — to get within one. Then they took the lead for good with
another two-run inning in the sixth. Paz again came up big with a
two-out two-run single to right to make it 7-6. Stan State would tag-on
four runs in the seventh for the final score.
Brandon Scott came out of the bullpen in the sixth and threw four innings and gave up just one hit for the victory.
Paz went 5-for-5 with three RBI and Jack Large was 4-for-5 with two doubles and drove in two runs in the first game. Vinny Margiotta had three hits, including a triple, and drove in two scores.
In game two, the Warriors trailed 3-0 before a five-run sixth inning.
Margiotta doubled in a run and later scored on a throwing error. Michael Wyatt tripled to the right-field wall to drive in two runs and scored on a balk.
Then it was Nathan Gutierrez's turn out of the 'pen to shut-down the Pioneers (9-9, 6-6 CCAA).
Gutierrez struck out the first six batters he faced and fanned two in the ninth for the dominating three-inning save. Kevin Hahn got the win after six innings of work.
Margiotta went 2-for-4 in the finale for the five-hit day. Paz was 1-for-3 to finish the double-dip with six hits.
