LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team let one get away in the
opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader
against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, but the Golden Eagles made sure to
keep their advantage in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles, after allowing seven ninth-inning runs to drop the
opener, 11-7, scored five times in the bottom of the first inning in the
nightcap and never looked back in a 9-5 victory. Cal State LA (4-10,
3-7 CCAA) has won two of the first three games of the four-game series
against Cal Poly Pomona (9-8, 7-4 CCAA).
Adam Gordon
had the big hit of the afternoon, launching a grand slam home run in
the bottom of the first to stake the Golden Eagles to a quick 5-0 lead.
Making the uprising even more notable was who it was against. Cal Poly
Pomona starter Tim Holdgrafer tossed a nine-inning no-hitter against UC
San Diego in his last start and was the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the
Week.
Cal State LA collected six hits and seven runs in three innings while handing Holdgrafer his first loss of the season.
Micah Hee
battled through four innings in the nightcap to earn the win for the
Golden Eagles. He allowed six hits and three earned runs while walking
six and striking out three. Angel Lerma allowed only one hit and one run over the final three innings to earn the save.
Gordon was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, while Alec Daily was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Zachary Grande was hit twice by the Broncos and came around to score both times, while Jordan Myrow was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Tyler Odekirk walked to open the first inning for the Golden Eagles, took second on a groundout and scored on a single by Spencer Sundahl for a quick 1-0 lead. Alec Daily
reached on an infield single and Grande was hit by a pitch to load the
bases. Gordon belted a no-doubt home run to right to boost the lead to
5-0.
Cal Poly Pomona bunched together four hits and took advantage of a pair
of errors to score three times in the second, but Cal State LA struck
for two more runs in the third. Grande was hit by a pitch, Gordon
followed with a double and Myrow delivered a two-run single to make it
7-3.
After the Broncos scored one in the top of the fifth, Cal State LA came
back with two in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-4. Odekirk drove
in one run with a sacrifice fly and Nic Sandoval drove in the other with a single.
Saxon Andross
pitched seven strong innings for the Golden Eagles in the opener,
allowing seven hits and four runs and leaving with a 7-4 advantage. Miguel Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth inning, but the Broncos scored seven runs in the ninth to stun the Golden Eagles.
Nick Peifer went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Broncos, while Myrow had three RBI for the Golden Eagles and Nate Alam
went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Nic Hernandez hit a home run
for the Broncos, while Grande hit a home run for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA is set to complete the series with a single game at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at 1 p.m.
