POMONA -- Cal State LA's baseball team got its four-game California
Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal Poly Pomona off to a
good start.
The Golden Eagles got outstanding pitching from Nick Moisant, Johnny Virgen and Zachary Grande
and beat the Broncos, 4-1, Thursday night at Scolinos Field. Cal State
LA (3-9, 2-6 CCAA) erased an early 1-0 deficit and took the lead for
good after a two-run fourth inning.
Moisant had his best start of the season and went 6 1/3 innings,
allowing only four hits and one run. He allowed a leadoff home run to
Cal Poly Pomona's Nick Peifer and then blanked the Broncos on just three
hits the rest of the way. He walked only one and struck out four to
pick up his first win of the season.
Virgen got the next four outs before turning things over to Grande, who
got the final out in the eighth inning with the tying runs on base and
then tossed a scoreless ninth inning while getting the final out with
the tying run at the plate.
Jordan Myrow was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI, Nate Alam was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Noe Garcia was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Cal State LA took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Alec Daily drew a walk, Myrow singled and Gordon reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Anthony Moreno drove in the first run by reaching on a fielder's choice and Alam delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fifth. Nic Sandoval and Spencer Sundahl drew walks and both runners moved up on a groundout. Myrow drove in Sandoval with an infield single to make it 3-1.
Cal State LA completed the scoring with a run in the sixth. Garcia's run-scoring double drove in Gordon to make it 4-1.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 3 p.m,.
