Cougars Split Twin Bill Against SF State

FREMONT, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team was victorious in game one, taking down San Francisco State 6-5 before falling in a 12-inning heartbreaker by a score of 8-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series finale on Saturday at Ohlone Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scardina's two-RBI double to right center put CSUSM up 2-0 in the first inning.
  • SF State evened the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a CSUSM error before a Tianna Jacques RBI triple.
  • The Gators took a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four singles, two walks and a hit-by-pitch.
  • CSUSM knotted the game at 5-5 on Wood's two-RBI double to left field followed by pinch hitter Ellie Smith's sacrifice fly.
  • After reaching on an error to begin the inning, Melody Forstie later scored on Scardina's RBI single to put CSUSM back on top at 6-5.

  • The Cougars improved to 6-9 overall and 5-8 in conference play while the Gators dropped to 10-8, 7-8 in CCAA action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM's offense caught fire in the first inning with three singles to begin the game followed by Scardina's bases-clearing double to make it 3-0.
  • Newhouser pushed Scardina across the plate on a single to right field to close the top of the first at 4-0.
  • The Gators tacked on a run in both the first and second innings to make it 4-2.
  • SF State evened the game at 4-all on Nina Revoir's RBI double and Katie Rohrer's RBI triple in the third inning.
  • Forstie crushed a solo homer to center field to put the Cougars back on top at 5-4 in the fourth inning.
  • CSUSM added an insurance run in the top of the fifth on Smith's second sacrifice fly of the day to make it 6-4.
  • SF State posted two runs in the sixth to even the game at 6-6.
  • In the top of the 12th, Andelin hit a one-out single to right field and scored on Newhouser's RBI double down the left field line to make it 7-6.
  • The Gators evened the game on a bases-loaded walk before Jacques hit a sac fly to win the game at 8-7.
