EMMITSBURG, MD - Enduring steady snowfall, the California women's lacrosse team battled through the poor weather conditions to rally in the second half - scoring the final five goals of the game - and defeated Mount St, Mary's, 12-9, Sunday afternoon on the Mount St. Mary's campus. The Golden Bears are now enjoying a three-game winning streak and have improved their record to 3-4 at the conclusion of the nonconference portion of their schedule.
Kirsten Swanson paced the Bears in scoring with five points (four goals, one assist). She scored all four of her goals in the second half. Susie Ropp also secured a hat trick, while Nikki Zaccaro and Marisa Kuberra each scored twice.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an early 3-1 lead at the outset of the contest, took a 7-5 lead into halftime and scored the first goal in the second half, but the Bears responded strongly after that, outscoring Mount St. Mary's, 7-2, in the second half to take control for good.
Cal scored the final five goals of the game over the final 20 minutes, including three straight scores from Swanson in a nine-minute span. Despite playing on the road, the Bears seemed to play better as the weather worsened.
In goal, Jenny Wilkens registered a season-high 13 saves, allowing only two goals after halftime. She also secured four ground balls.
Ropp scored Cal's first two goals of the day before Zaccaro scored twice and Kuberra chipped in one of her two goals during the first half.
Eliza Christman found the back of the net once, along with a team-best five draw controls.
Cal returns to Berkeley next weekend to open Pac-12 play. The Bears face Oregon on Friday, March 8, at 5 pm from California Memorial Stadium.
