Nunes Shines in Final Game of Tournament of Champions

After a tough two days in the Tournament of Champions, the Eagles played one final game on Sunday, and with their ace on the mound, they finished in style.

Freshman Callie Nunes has been a star all season, and on Sunday, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks got an up close view of the dominant right hander.

Nunes threw a complete game, giving up only one hit, walking zero, and striking out 10.  She faced just one hitter over the minimum.  In a freshman year filled with tremendous performances, this was her best day yet.

Nunes was not alone.  The Eagles' offense came out on fire.  In the 1st inning, Amanda Gjertsen knocked in a run.  One inning later, the Eagles scored two more.  McKinsey Thorpe's sacrifice fly plated Sarah Kretschmar and Heather Nonora added another run on a Lumberjack throwing error.  In the 3rd, Myka Hughes scored on a fielder's choice to make the score 4-0 through three.

The Eagle bats cooled the rest of the way and they were unable to score again, but they didn't need to.  Nunes shut down HSU, running her season record to 11-2 and improving the Eagles' record to 17-9.

Eagle Eye: Ryann Ferguson finished two-for-four at the plate with a run scored.  Hughes and Nonora each went one-for-three with a run.  Thorpe finished one-for-three with an RBI.
