Broncos Open Series with 11-4 Win Over Sonoma

POMONA – With two outs in both the fourth and fifth inning, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball combined to score 10 of their 11 runs as they defeated Sonoma State 11-4 to open the four-game series at Scolinos Field.


THE BASICS:

GAME SUMMARY:

  • Sonoma State got on the board first as a single to right field drove in the first run of the game, giving SSU a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
  • The Broncos answered back in the bottom of the second as Matt Manskar grounded out to the shortstop, bringing in Drew Cowley for the score.
  • After beginning the fourth inning with two straight outs, the Broncos took over, scoring four runs. Jacob Bernardy hit an RBI single to right field before a two-run home run by Cody Martin gave the Broncos a 5-1 lead.
  • Once again, the Broncos began the fifth inning with two outs before adding six runs to pull away from the Seawolves. CPP scored on three wild pitches in the inning while Nic Hernandez hit a two-run triple as the Broncos went up 11-1.
  • Sonoma State made some noise in the sixth inning, hitting back-to-back home runs but couldn't but into the deficit any further, losing 11-4.

KEY PERFORMERS:

  • Three players finished with two RBIs while Hernandez and Bernardy each collected two hits in the game.
  • Also finishing with multiple hit games was Bryce Graddy and Cowley with two hits each.
  • Ryan Alsworth collected his fifth win of the season as he improved to 5-2 for the Broncos. He finished with six innings pitched, allowing four runs off of seven hits while striking out three batters.
  • Tossing three innings of relief was Darin May who allowed zero hits with two strikeouts.
