Nature Walk at Lake Solano Park

Solano Valley - Join volunteer Barbara Cooper to admire our feathered friends at Lake Solano on Saturday November 9, 2013 . She’ll share why this area is a magnet for both year-round residents and migratory birds. Learn how birds have figured in myths and religions of the world and other “bird lore”. For instance, did you know that ravens are enlisted as military birds for England and kept in the Tower of London. Bet you didn’t realize the expression “eat crow”, which refers to making a difficult apology, is derived from eating the tough, unappetizing flesh of older crows. Listen to amazing facts and fables as you stroll along Putah Creek on this “not so usual” bird walk. Dress in layers and be prepared for cold, wet weather. Don’t forget to bring binoculars, cameras and an inquiring mind with you.


The bird program begins at 10am and meets at the boat ramp/canoe rental area on the Day-Use side of Lake Solano Park & Campground at 8685 Pleasants Valley Road Winters, CA. The presentation is free, and parking is only $5 per vehicle, payable at the entrance to the day-use area. No RSVP is necessary. Heavy rain cancels. History & Nature Walks at Lake Solano Park

 Saturday, January 26^th and Saturday, February 9^th, 10am-Noon

SOLANO COUNTY –    Enjoy guided walks along the Shoreline Trail of Lake Solano Park on Saturday, January 26^th and Saturday, February 9^th with volunteers Cricket Kanouff and Kitty Van Newkoop.  Walk back through the mists of time to learn about the Patwin Indians, the Berryessa brothers and John Wolfskill’s impact on the region.  Enjoy the beauty of nature – the lake and its surroundings.  Discover how Putah Creek was transformed into Lake Solano, bringing water to farmers and residents of Solano County.  Learn about the native trees and plants, and some of their medicinal secrets, passed down through the generations by the Native Americans.  You may have the good fortune of spotting a Great Blue Heron, a Snowy Egret, a peacock in all its feathered glory or other wildlife on the tour! 

Meet Cricket and Kitty for these walks at 10am in front of Lake Solano Park’s Nature Center at 8685 Pleasants Valley Road, near Highway 128 and the town of Winters.  Their presentations are free, and parking is only $5 per vehicle, payable across the road at the entrance to the day-use area.  No RSVP is necessary, but note that the walks are canceled if it rains.  For questions in advance, call 707-432-0150 x200 or emailvolunteer@solanolandtrust.org.  For same-day information, call 530-795-2990. 

These tours are a great opportunity to have fun, learn about the area, and get fresh air and exercise.  Be prepared for variable weather and trail conditions by bringing water, wearing sturdy closed-toe shoes, and dressing in layers. A camera and binoculars are also recommended.  Continue to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife at Lake Solano Park by picnicking, or renting a campsite for the weekend on a first-come, first-served basis.
