BELMONT, Calif. – In one of the wildest games in recent memory, the
Notre Dame de Namur lacrosse team scored with 1:03 left in overtime to
outlast Felician University. Ryan Elston put away the game-winner on a feed from Bennett Duffy to give the Argonauts the 15-14 victory.
The game was back-and-forth from the start, featuring 12 ties and just
as many lead changes with neither team leading by more than one goal for
the entire second half. Felician got on the board first in the opening
minutes before Jacob McFarland
notched a pair of goals to put the Argos on top. After the visitors
evened the game at 2-2, NDNU closed the first period with three goals in
the final two minutes. Duffy assisted on goals by Elston and Ethan Gilbert and AJ Caturay closes the first with a goal to make it 5-2.
The three goal lead was the biggest of the contest but did not last long
as the Golden Eagles scored the next three goals to tie the game at
5-5. From that point on, the teams traded goals for the rest of the
game. Duffy put the Argos back on top with 26 second left in the half
only to have Felician even the game with a score of their own eight
seconds later.
Michael Haas
opened the second half with a goal in the opening minute but the Golden
Eagles netted the next two to lead 8-7. McFarland and Elston responded
for NDNU with goals of their own to put the Argos back on top by a goal
at the halfway point of the third.
Felician responded with an equalizer less than a minute later.
McFarland once again was on the receiving end of a Duffy assist to put
the Argos back up at 10-9. The visitors would net the next two to close
out the third period and took an 11-10 lead into the fourth.
That did not last long either with Gilbert scoring again one minute into
the fourth to even the score once again. The back-and-forth continued
with McFarland and Duffy alternating goals with the Golden Eagles to see
the game tied again, this time at 13-13.
As the game moved into the final five minutes of regulation, the Argos
took a 14-13 lead with a great move and goal by Caturay at the 4:19
mark. The NDNU defense held strong over the next three minutes but
after a failed clear James D'albora tied the game for the final time at
14-14.
Both teams gained a possession in the final minute but neither could put in the game-winner and the game moved to overtime.
In the extra period, the Argos got the first chance but were stopped by
goalie Pat Hemmer. After a turnover by the Golden Eagles, NDNU drew a
penalty and got an extra-man opportunity. On the ensuing possession,
Hemmer made a fantastic kick save on a McFarland shot to keep the game
going.
Felician gained possession off the save and set up the amazing finish
for the Argos on their failed clear attempt. The Argos forced a
turnover at the top of the box on the right side. Duffy scooped up the
ball, took a few strides towards the net and sent a pass to Elston.
Elston caught the ball on the run and fired the shot over the charging
goalie for the NDNU victory.
The Argos outshot the Golden Eagles 51-39 while also leading in
groundballs 42-27 and face-offs 17-15. They also scored a season high
four extra-man goals.
