Waves Finish Second at PCSC Pentathlon

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team followed up a season-opening victory at the PCSC Relays with a second-place finish at the PCSC Pentathlon in La Mirada Saturday.

The Waves scored 633 points at the event to finish just 17.5 points behind California Baptist at the meet. It was really a two-team race as the Waves were 179 points ahead of third place Azusa Pacific. Fresno Pacific came in fourth with 258.5 points, followed by Biola with 164.5 and Concordia with 122.5.

The pentathlon score combined with the Waves win at the relays yesterday gives Pepperdine an overall win at the early-season PCSC meet.

The Pepperdine divers were the top scorers in the meet for the Waves and were led by Sydney Newman (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS), who placed fourth, and Tori Occhipinti (Coto de Caza, Calif./Crean Lutheran HS) who placed fifth. Samantha Newman (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS) placed sixth for Pepperdine and Ali North (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) also placed in the top 10 at ninth.

In the sprint IM pentathlon, Pepperdine senior Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) finished second with a total time of 2:55.46, just getting edged out by CBU’s Ashley Johnson’s time of 2:54.06. Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) finished third in the distance IM pentathlon, putting up a total time of 6:15.11.

Pepperdine returns home next week for the Malibu Invitational, which will run Oct. 16-17 at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
