“Whale Watch Season is Here!”

San Pedro, California – December 26, 2013 marks the beginning of the Cabrillo Whalewatch
program’s 43rd year, which is co-sponsored by the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the LA Chapter of
the American Cetacean Society. More than 100 trained naturalists will take to the sea aboard whale
watching boats from Redondo Beach Sportfishing, Spirit Cruises in San Pedro and Matt Walsh in
Marina Del Rey.

Throughout the whale watching season, which runs through mid-April, Cabrillo Whalewatch
naturalists share exciting facts with passengers about Pacific gray whales and other marine life
spotted off Southern California’s Coast. Naturalists are trained to interpret sightings as whale
watchers head out in pursuit of these majestic animals on their formidable 12 - 14,000 mile round trip
migration.

The whales migrate by our coast annually, from the nutrient-rich waters of the Arctic seas
where they spend the summer feeding, to the warm lagoons of Baja, California, where they mate and
give birth. New calves can be seen swimming with their mothers as they return north during the
second half of the whale watching season. After a record number of whale sightings last spring,
whale watchers are anticipating another banner gray whale watching season.

The Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive, San Pedro, and is a facility of the
City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks with support from FRIENDS of Cabrillo
Marine Aquarium. For information about whale watching and scheduled departure times, please
contact Nancee Kioudjian, Whalewatch Coordinator at (310) 548-7770 or
CabrilloWhalewatch@gmail.com.
