Pioneer Baseball Splits Sunday Twinbill Against Cal Poly Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team split their home doubleheader against the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos Sunday afternoon, April 8 at Pioneer Field.
 
With the twinbill split the Pioneers move to 16-17 on the season and a mark of 13-14 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) competition.
 
The opening game featured the visiting CPP Broncos pick up their first win of the series with a, 7-0 shutout victory over CSUEB.
 
Despite the outcome the ball game the Pioneers were able to rattle off six hits in the contest. Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) led East Bay with two hits on the afternoon. Dallas Dey (Tustin, Calif.), Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.), Colt Parshall (Oakdale, Calif) and Jacob Eder (Prescott, Ariz.) all chipped one hit apiece. Dey also added a stolen base.
 
Donavon Ramirez (San Jose, Calif.) got the start on the mound for East Bay and did not allow any hits while fanning one batter in his only inning of action. Ransome Alexander (L, 0-2) (Fullerton, Calif.) gave up one hit and one walk for CSUEB. Joe Blair (Modesto, Calif.) did not allow any hits nor runs in his time on the mound. RJ Hanson led the Poineers with three strikeouts and no walks through six innings of work.
 
In the doubleheader finale, both teams were scoreless until the third innings with CPP scored the first run of the game. Cal State East Bay would respond with runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth innings to secure the, 3-1 victory.
 
Dallas Dey finished the game with yet another hit and a stolen base. Kyosuke Ushimaru doubled and scored a run for East Bay. Colt Parshall added a hit and a run scored.
 
Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) logged in a hit and drove in an RBI. Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) tripled and scored a run for the Pioneers. Paul Bryniarski (Fountain Hills, Calif.) and Evan Steele (Clovis, Calif.) each recorded RBI's for CSUEB.
 
Andrew Fernandez (W, 2-4) (Castro Valley, Calif.) struck out two Bronco batters while only allowing two walks and one earned run during his six innings of action. Jordan Milligan (San Jose, Calif.) got the start for CSUEB and allowed no runs in his inning on the mound.

East Bay Edged by #7 Dixie State in Non-Conference Doubleheader

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team fought hard in its doubleheader Wednesday against No. 7 ranked Dixie State, but wound up on the losing end of both games in non-conference action. 

Abby Greer was out-dueled in the first contest by Trailblazer ace Cambrie Hazel, who threw a no-hitter in a 2-1 Dixie win. The Pioneer bats came alive in the second game, but fell short by a final score of 8-5.

Greer was outstanding in tossing her 11th complete game of the season, scattering just three hits and giving up zero earned runs. The only damage against her came in the top of the first inning. After an error and a walk, Jessica Gonzalez ripped a two-out single to give Dixie a 2-0 lead, and as it turned out, all the runs the team would need for victory.

East Bay scored its only run in the third when Belle Placencia was hit by a pitch to lead things off. A

Tritons Power Past Pioneers in Series Opener

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team dropped the opener of its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road series at UC San Diego on Thursday under the lights at Triton Ballpark, as UCSD pulled away to win by a final score of 25-2.

The loss drops the Pioneers a game below the .500 mark at 13-14 for the season.

The Tritons needed just 16 hits to tally their 25 runs, as they scored in bunches. The home team hit six home runs against Pioneer pitching, including a pair of grand slams.

UCSD also took advantage of three East Bay defensive errors, which led to three unearned runs in the first off starter Andrew Fernandez and three unearned in the fourth off Ransome Alexander.

Alexander pitched a scoreless third, and freshman Stas Kuntz retired the side in order in the seventh, but the Tritons scored multiple runs in each of the other six innings.

Offensively, the Pioneers totaled seven hits. They scored their first run in the second inning on singles by Dallas Dey and Kyosuke Ushimaru and an RBI ground out by Jacob Eder. They picked up their second run in the ninth on a single by Nolan Jekich and an RBI double by Matt Cantelme.

Jekich was the only CSUEB player to reach base twice in the game, going 1-for-1 with a walk in two plate appearances off the bench.

#25 CSUEB's Win Streak Snapped at #20 Cal State Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The No. 25 ranked Cal State East Bay water polo team had its four-game win streak snapped on Friday, falling on the road to No. 20 Cal State Northridge by a final score of 14-4.

The Pioneer offense went cold in the team's attempt to knock off its second top-25 opponent of the season. They fall to 2-1 on their current Spring Break road trip and 11-8 overall this season. 

The Matadors set the tone by scoring on their first possession of the game. They held a 3-0 lead after one quarter and stretched it out to 7-0 before halftime.

CSUN scored three more unanswered goals in the third before the Pioneers were finally able to have some offensive success. Trailing 11-0 in the fourth, Auriel Bill scored on back-to-back possessions to put East Bay on the scoreboard. 

Brittany Smith added a goal two minutes later, and then Maci Taylor notched the team fourth goal of the afternoon with a minute left in the game. 

Makenna Nation tallied seven saves in the loss. Briana Ruiz led the squad with two steals.

#25 East Bay Cruises Past La Verne, 14-6, for Fourth Straight Win

LA VERNE, Calif. -- The No. 25 ranked Cal State East Bay water polo team cruised to its fourth straight victory on Thursday morning, defeating the University of La Verne on the road by a score of 14-6.

After claiming the first two contests of their four-game Spring Break road trip, the  Pioneers have now won seven of their last eight overall to improve to 11-7 for the season.

Eight different players scored for East Bay in the victory, led by reigning WWPA Player of the Week Adrien Van Dyke, who netted each of her game-high four goals within the first nine minutes of game time.

Van Dyke put the Pioneers ahead on the very first possession of the game, but La Verne answered back two minutes later, and it was tied 1-1 at the midway point of the first period. CSUEB then put on a scoring barrage, tallying three goals over the next three minutes. Auriel Bill found the back of the cage to re-take the lead, and then Van Dyke scored twice more to secure a hat trick before the end of the first. 

The Pioneers had so much fun out-scoring the Leopards 4-2 in the opening period, they did the exact same thing in the second to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. Van Dyke found the back of the cage for fourth time, and then Maci Taylor, Briana Ruiz, and Cheyenne Brady added tallies in the goal column before the end of the second period. 

Makenna Nation only had to make one save during the first two quarters to pick up a victory in the cage. The junior handed off goalkeeping duties to Erika McFeggan, who notched three saves in just under 14 minutes of game time before Skyler Ramirez took over for the end of the fourth quarter. 

McFeggan and the CSUEB defense shut La Verna out in the third period, as the visitors continued to stretch out their lead. Maci Taylor picked up her second goal of the day, and then Ivanna Anderson and Beverly Ayers got in on the fun to put the Pioneers ahead 11-4 after the third.

Anderson and Ruiz notched their second goals in the fourth period, and then Leilani Vazquez became the eighth Pioneer to score to close out the morning. It was an impressive defensive effort for East Bay, which held La Verne to just two goals in the second half.

Bill finished with two assists and three steals, and Taylor notched an assist and two steals to go along with her two goals.

The Pioneers are back in action Friday at 12:00 p.m. to face their toughest test of the week at No. 20 Cal State Northridge, as they attempt to secure their second victory of the year against a top-25 team.
