No. 6 UCLA Steamrolls No. 55 BYU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 6 UCLA men’s tennis team steamrolled No. 55 Brigham Young on Thursday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.  With the 7-0 win, the Bruins improve to 11-2 overall.

UCLA set the pace of the match from the start, quickly securing the doubles point on courts 1 and 3.  Playing at the top of the lineup, Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell downed BYU’s Jeremy Bourgeois and Aidan Carrazedo, 6-3.  Gage Brymer and Austin Rapp followed suit on court 3 with a 6-3 win of their own over Keaton Cullimore and Andrey Goryachkov.

The Bruins carried this momentum into singles play, taking five of six first sets.  Logan Staggs and Di Giulio defeated their Cougar opponents in straights on courts 4 and 5, respectively, to extend UCLA’s lead to 3-0.

Up 5-4 in the second set over Goryachkov, No. 93 Sell sealed the deal for the Bruins with a service
winner.  With Sell’s straight-set win on court 3, UCLA took an insurmountable 4-0 lead over BYU.

The remaining matches played out on courts 1, 2, and 6.  Knotted up at 6-6 in the second set, No. 57 Martin Redlicki and BYU’s Shane Monroe went into the tiebreaker.  After trading point for point, Redlicki pulled away at the end to edge Monroe 7-5 and take the match.

Closing out singles play, No. 72 Brymer defeated Cullimore in straights on court 2 and Ryoto Tachi rallied from being down a set to edging Carrazedo in three sets on court 6.       

Next up, UCLA heads to Las Vegas to take on UNLV.  The match takes place Mar. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
