UCLA Falls to Cal State Fullerton

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Bruins dropped a midweek contest to the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 14-7, on Tuesday evening in front of 1,382 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Bruins racked up 10 hits in the loss, led by Sean Bouchard (2-for-4, R, 3 RBI, BB) who recorded his seventh multi-hit game in his last eight games. Four other Bruins finished with two hits, including Brett Urabe (2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB) who drove in a pair of runs.

Jake Bird (1-2) earned the loss for UCLA after allowing seven runs (six earned) on three hits over 1.1 innings of work. Cal State Fullerton reliever Gavin Velasquez (1-1) got the win after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Cal State Fullerton (13-11) got the scoring started early with a run in the opening frame. With two outs and a man on second, Turner Buis delivered an RBI-double to left field to get the Titans on the board first.

Then, Fullerton backed that up with an eight-run second inning to take a nine-run advantage on the Bruins. The Titans racked up just three hits, but four walks, two hit by pitch and an error aided the efforts to give them a 9-0 lead.

UCLA (12-10) bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second to inch closer. A two-out, two-RBI single from Urabe brought the Bruins within seven runs, 9-2.

However, the UCLA pitching staff could not corral the Titan offense which continued to score runs, totaling five more tallies over the next four innings.

The Bruin offense tried to keep pace, scoring two runs in the sixth and eighth innings, along with a one-run inning in the fifth, but could never fully recover from the early deficit.

The Bruins will now continue Pac-12 Conference play this weekend when they travel to face the California Golden Bears for a three-game series in Berkeley. The series begins on Friday, April 1 at 7:00pm PT and fans can listen to all of the weekend’s action live on uclabruins.com.
