Help the City of Fontana Ensure Everyone is Counted in the 2020 Census

The City of Fontana is inviting all community members interested in participating in the Census 2020 outreach effort to attend the first Fontana Counts Committee meeting on:

Wednesday, April 17, 2019
Fontana City Hall Council Chambers
8353 Sierra Avenue
6:30 p.m.

Committee members serve as the representatives of their communities, such as non-profit organizations, businesses, faith-based organizations, schools and more. The committee will work together to develop strategies to ensure their communities will partake in the census, and reduce the under-count of children and other hard-to-count communities in Fontana.

"April 1, 2020 is one year away, and we have a lot of work to do. Because the census is taken once every 10 years, we only have one shot at getting this right," states Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren. "We’re looking for those who would like to be involved in making sure every single person in Fontana is counted."

The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census of the population be conducted once every 10 years for the purposes of reapportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and redrawing district lines all levels of government. Census data is also used to determine how more than $675 billion in federal funds are distributed back to states and local communities every year for services and infrastructure, including health care, jobs, schools, roads and businesses. The top census-funded federal programs include:
  • Medicaid
  • Medicare
  • National School Lunch Program
  • Highway Planning and Construction
  • Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP)
Census 2020 is the first-ever U.S. census in its history to collect responses online. Households can expect an invitation in the mail in March 2020 with directions on how to respond online, by phone or by mail.
