BEST OF 2013: Lewis R. French "The Grandfather of Sail"

Launched in 1871 the lewis R. French is the oldest sailing schooner!
Lewis R. French

A truly unique vacation....
A cruise aboard the Windjammer Lewis R. French is both an exciting and relaxing vacation, combining the beautiful coast of Maine with tremendous sailing aboard a historic tallship.

We offer 3, 4 and 6 day sailing vacations from late May to early October, sailing from our beautiful homeport of Camden, Maine. Spend your days sailing Maine's pristine coast, and your evenings anchored in snug, gorgeous harbors.

On board, we have single, double and bunkbeds cabins available, as well as a full galley where our delicious meals, snacks and desserts are prepared by our professional crew.

The French is a very traditional and historic vessel, in fact she was designated a National Historic Landmark. Launched in April 1871, she is the oldest active commercial schooner in the United States. She is still sailed exactly as she would have sailed a hundred years ago: she has no noisy inboard engine on board and relies on nearly 3000 square feet of sail. Fear not though, she has been upgraded with electricity, modern navigation equipment and conveniences, and complies with all U.S. Coast Guard safety standards. We are 100% non-smoking on board.

Please explore our website for more information and feel free to give us a call (1-800-469-4635) or email with any questions or if you would just prefer to speak with a human. We look forward to sailing with you aboard the Lewis R. French.

Timberwind " A True Mainer"

Timberwind before The Great Schooner Race 2012
Timberwind

Your Maine Sailing Vacation Begins Here
Sailing aboard the Schooner Timberwind for a 3, 4, or 6 day windjammer cruise may be one of the smartest vacation decisions you will ever make! Your adventure begins in picturesque Rockport Harbor, home of Andre the Seal, amidst the sights and sounds of sea birds and the invigorating scent of fresh, salt air. From the moment you are welcomed aboard this National Historic Landmark Vessel, you'll feel as though you have stepped back in time. The afternoon sun glistens off the clear waters of the bay, reflected in the village perched above, while lobster boats return to port with a full days catch, just as they have done for over a hundred years. Meeting your fellow shipmates and crew will no doubt further your anticipation of a voyage aboard one of Maine's most venerable and beloved schooners in one of the most beautiful and acclaimed cruising grounds on the planet!

An all-inclusive sailing adventure
There is nothing else to plan or organize! Enjoy sumptuous meals lovingly prepared on our Shipmate wood-burning cook stove fresh from our galley daily. Delicious food made from scratch, presented with a passion for detail including an island lobster bake, are the hallmarks of every Timberwind Cruise. You are welcome to bring your own alcoholic beverages, we'll provide the ice, storage, and the scenery...!

A native Maine Windjammer, the Timberwind is the only pilot schooner sailing the coast of Maine. With no inboard engine, she sails in harmony with the winds and tides. As the saying goes, "Wherever we end up, it's right where we want to be, and whenever we get there, we're right on time."

Isaac H. Evans " One Of A Kind"

Isaac H. Evans  entering Rockland Harbor.
Isaac H Evans

Are you ready for an adventure? Join us for a single-night or multi-night sailing adventure on Penobscot Bay, often called the best cruising grounds in the world. With Maine as a backdrop it's hard to go wrong; islands, lobster, lighthouses, eagles, osprey, seals, the occasional whale...the way life should be! We would like to welcome you aboard next summer, but until then, you can visit these pages to get a better idea of what we do and learn why sailing with us is the perfect choice for your safe and relaxing vacation adventure. We simply can't wait to share the Evans experience with you!

We specialize in kid-friendly family trips aboard the Evans. For years we've been welcoming children on all of our cruises and have earned the reputation of "the family boat" because we spend lots of time exploring ashore and have activities and foods for the whole family. Our atmosphere is casual, so kick off your shoes and go barefoot if you'd like. We don't stress education, but everyone learns something about nature, maritime history, and teamwork on a schooner. We even carry our own lobster traps and fishing poles! Anyone age 6 and older is welcome on any of our adventures; younger guests welcomed on a case-by-case basis.

But family trips don't necessarily mean lots of young children. We've found that more and more families are joining us for multi-generational celebrations; reunions, birthdays, and anniversaries. The Evans is also perfect for corporate retreats, weddings, and other special events. If you prefer to sail without children, consider joining us in June and September when younger sailors are in school.

Picture being anchored in a quiet harbor eating a delightful dinner on deck. Our combination of excellent food, knowledgeable crew, unmatched scenery and a magnificent vessel with modern conveniences, makes for an unforgettable vacation. We're the only windjammer to have received the Maine Tourism Award. It's a great honor and we're proud to offer award-winning vacations. We were also featured on the cover of the 2004 and 2009 Maine Invites You: Maine's Official Travel Planner and on the 2004 Maine Official Highway Map. We take great pride in the Isaac H. Evans and we're sure you will too.

This season marks the 127th anniversary for the Evans and we hope you come celebrate with us! Space is limited so if you see anything that interests you, make sure you reserve your berth as soon as possible. Only about 600 people will have the opportunity to experience the Evans this year - wouldn't you like to be one of them? Write us (PO Box 791, Rockland, ME 04841) or call toll free 1-877-238-1325 and we'll send you a free full color brochure and schedule.

Victory Chimes "The Mother Ship."

Victory Chimes "The Mother Ship."
Victory Chimes
Aboard the Victory Chimes

It is the most relaxing, restorative vacation you could imagine. Pack up your day-to-day cares and leave them on the dock--you won't miss them at all. You'll be much too busy savoring the simple pleasures of shipboard life: the time to read a good book, the tranquility to snooze in the warmth of the afternoon sun, the freedom to go wherever the wind takes us, the adventure of discovering a new harbor every evening. You'll find special places ashore, too, whether we're lying off an unspoiled island beach or a salty seafaring port.

On the Victory Chimes, passengers seem to get to know each other more easily than they might at a land-based resort. We think it's because the atmosphere is so restful, so conductive to chatting over breakfast or sharing the thrill of seeing a porpoise trace crescents above the waves. But there's also plenty of time and space for being quietly alone, simply gazing at the sea.

Don't worry about getting lax with your exercise regimen--unless you want to! Before or after the day's sail, you can swim, give your biceps a workout in the rowboat, go for a run, or take an energetic walk along the shore. If you're a sailing buff, or are eager to become one, the captain and crew will invite your help hoisting and lowering the sails. To hone your navigational skills, you can practice plotting our course with the compass and chart laid out just for passengers, or practice marlinspike seamanship with a crew member.

Once the anchor is down in the evening, we enjoy gathering on the main deck to toast the day. We provide the hors d'oeuvres, and you're welcome to bring soft drinks or spirits for your personal consumption (for safety and in consideration of other passengers, we of course cannot tolerate excessive drinking). We always look forward to dinner with great eagerness--what with the marvelous aromas coming from the galley, it's all we can do to wait until the brass bell is rung! You will feast on lobster and other unique hardy New England fare that our Chef prepares daily. All meals are included from fresh blueberry pancakes in the morning to homemade breads and desserts at lunch and dinner. After sharing in an informal sing-along or slipping away for a final look at the stars, it's time for a good night's sleep. You'll find you sleep like a baby and awaken refreshed, ready for a big breakfast! Both breakfast and dinner are served in the main saloon. Lunches are usually served on deck as we sail along.

Accommodations

The Victory Chimes size makes her a very comfortable vessel. Her 132 feet of deck space offers plenty of room for you to grab one of our over stuffed deck mats and stretch out, or you can find a secluded spot to catch some rays or to snuggle up with a good book. Two full size on-deck showers are available for your convenience in the forward house. Down below, the large saloon where meals are served offers a great spot as a respite from the sun or weather, or a place to play cribbage or other games available on board. We also have a large selection of books for your reading pleasure.

Aft of the main saloon, the passenger accommodations open off the airy companionway. All are outside cabins with opening portholes, and all are at least six feet by eight feet, with nine feet of headroom. All have hot and cold running water, good reading lights, and large berths with comfortable mattresses, pillows, sheets, and warm blankets. Some cabins accommodate two, while larger ones have multiple berths just right for families. Single cabins are also available. Each cabin is comfortably spacious with storage areas for your belongings.

We have four special suites that are ideal for the honeymoon couple or those who require a little more in the way of creature comforts. Each of these cabins has a double bed, hot and cold running water and it's own head (toilet). The decor is a little more "yacht like" with a stocked library. They are available on a first come first serve basis at a slightly higher cost than our regular cabin and based on double occupancy. If interested please inquire.

American Eagle "American Classic"

American Eagle

Sail with Captain John Foss and the crew of the Schooner American Eagle for a truly excellent vacation and a great experience. Step back in time and enjoy a leisurely cruise along the coast of Maine. Sail where the wind blows and leave the world behind.

The American Eagle sails on cruises of varying lengths, from two to nine days. During the 2011 season we enjoyed exploring the offshore islands from Casco Bay to the coastline past Mt. Desert on an 8-night voyage. For 2012, the American Eagle, the only windjammer in the fleet certified to do international voyages, visited the beautiful coastline of New Brunswick, Canada. Our annual trip to Gloucester Massachusetts to participate in the Mayor’s Cup Race over Labor Day is a favorite, too.  2013 features an eight day adventure down east to the Canadian border and back, and a variety of four and six day cruises including moonlit sails as weather permits.

Lighthouses, wildlife, and unspoiled scenery are part of every trip. Each cruise is a unique vacation: exciting sailing at a reasonable price. Half of our guests have sailed with us before, or have come on the recommendation of a friend.

If we don’t have a trip that fits your schedule, we recommend the schooner Heritage also sailing from the North End Shipyard in Rockland.
