IRVINE, Calif. – The Academy of Art women's tennis program was recognized with two selections to the All-PacWest women's tennis team.
Ranked 16th in the region, junior Annika Schneider was named to the All-PacWest third team in singles. The Heidelberg, Germany native played in the second, third, and fourth positions while accumulating a 6-6 record. Although all four of her matches in the PacWest Championship were unfinished, she had won the first set and was leading in the second in three out of the four contests.
"Annika is such a versatile and smart player," said head coach Nicole Briceno-Garzon. "Her ability to adapt her game when necessary is one of the things that makes her such a great competitor. She is very deserving of this award."
This is Schneider's second All-PacWest award and her first in singles.
Freshmen Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp were also honored, being voted to the All-PacWest second team.
The twins are the first all freshmen doubles team to receive an All-PacWest nod in program history and the first in the conference since HPU's freshmen duo in 2012. Alma and Klara combined for a team-high 15 doubles victories, taking 10 of their first 12 matches and six of their last seven. The tandem is ranked fifth in the region and 25th in the country.
"What makes Klara and Alma such a great doubles team is their willingness to continue perfecting their game," said Briceno-Garzon. "Despite already having such a natural ability and understanding of doubles, it is so beautiful to watch them play together."
This is first All-PacWest award for both of the twins.
"These three girls have worked really hard all season and I'm really proud of them for their achievements," said Briceno-Garzon. "I'm excited to keep seeing them develop and achieve even greater things."
