MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA & DIRECTV CEO, MIKE WHITE, ANNOUNCE $200K INVESTMENT TO SUPPORT STEM EDUCATION

Coinciding with National Digital Learning Day, DIRECTV to Announce Math Incentive Program to Inspire a Love for Math Among Students and Their Families
Los Angeles, California - Addressing the need to prepare students for in-demand STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), DIRECTV will celebrate Digital Learning Day on Feb. 6th with a major donation to the Partnership for LA Schools’ Blended Learning program, which supports STEM education by combining face-to-face classroom instruction with online math learning programs. The event will be held at Ritter Elementary in Watts, which was recently designated “School of the Year” by the Mind Research Institute, for their achievements using ST Math, an online math program.

WHAT:     DIRECTV will announce its contribution to support implementation of ST Math and launch its “Math Challenge” to Partnership schools to inspire students to fall in love with math. Incentives, including iPad Minis and free DIRECTV service for a year, will be awarded to teachers and parents whose students show the most improvement using ST Math. For students, the Math Challenge will culminate in an end-of-year grand prize featuring an exclusive event for one middle and one elementary school with the highest ST Math usage.

WHY:       To address the STEM crisis, the Partnership has made math the cornerstone of its STEM strategy and DIRECTV’s support will strengthen the Partnership’s STEM initiatives among K-8 students, and help prepare tomorrow’s generation.

WHEN:     Wed., Feb. 6 from 9-10 a.m. (Program from 9 to 9:30 a.m., visits with students using ST Math in the computer lab from 9:30 to 10 a.m.)
